Help with vintage -- NAF "Jerry Can" 4.5 Gallons

I ran into a couple of these "jerry cans" recently. Anyone know what vintage or where they might have shown up (ground based? stored in aircraft? stateside factory usage, etc)

Aluminum cylinder approx 36" x 12" with end spigot and spec tag: "Cap 4 1/2 US GAL - FRESH WATER - Stock No. NAF DWG 56778" Could be 56776. Container designed to lay horizontal.

NAF being Naval Aircraft Factory I think. Googled the stuffing out of it and the search came back to this forum for a discussion of NAF marked tools.
