Need some can help

Post by prestoncohunter » Sat Jun 09, 2018 5:02 am

Just spotted at a yard sale this can for 5 bucks. No date and other than US embossed on the side these are the only markings I have found.

No date that I can find, it is a flip top (my terminology as I know NOTHING about cans). I have left the sale and have texted asking for pictures of the lid and will post when I get them.

Any idea of age and is it worth the 5 bucks and any idea of the era. Looks to be original paint and but not beat up badly.

I'm not a can expert, but there are plenty of them on this forum. It is a water can. I have a few and the date is typically on the top near the manufacturing mark where you took the photo. At least on the ones I have.

Most likely, someone will be able to determine vintage for you. Looks like a nice can for $5! Tough to pass up at that price...

Not sure if I'll get or not, if I had a clue on the era.

Still would like any info for next time, ran back around the block to pick up the can and it was gone  Should have gone with my gut and just got it for 5 bucks, I've wasted 5 bucks on worse gambles.

The markings on the side of the can (USA & G) can be used to determine rough era.

Did you flip it over and look at the bottom?

Post war can. “US” and square G.

It’s marked the same on both sides.

This is the post-war can from the above photo. It is a United States Metal Corporation (or something close) Not United States Marine Corps and was manufactured in 1986.

DOt 51 indicates some adherence to a department of transpo standard, the numbers before “86” deal with the materials meeting an industry standard and the “86” is year of make. This is a very very late metal can.
