Post by Herb Tate » Sun May 16, 2004 1:00 pm

I have a USMC water can made by CONCO. Does anyone know about these cans?

I have a number of them. Mine came from old Civil Defense stock and the old timers here at work tell me that they were there from at least the '50's. B8ut as to when mine were made? No clue as there are no stampings either on the top our bottom other than CONCO.

Were they marked for Civil Defense? The only CD cans that I have are the drums.

No just metal strapped together stacks of, what looks to be bronze green cansW/yellow stencil WATER and another numerical/letter stencil. No other markings.
I have seen other CD cans that were round about 5 gal, but most of them were for "sanitary" purposes.

usmc water cans

I have seen a few of the cans you mention. I have a pet theory. In Viet-Nam we had fire-bases on the tops of mountains. Everything that they needed had to be brought in on helicopters, including water. Weight being a big factor it is logical to assume that these cans were made for that use. An extra benefit of aluminum is that the inside didn't need to be lined. Anyway, that's my theory. Maybe you know somebody who was at one of those fire-bases that you could ask. Tom

Matt, before I answer, may I ask what you mean by Water can? What makes it different from a USMC gas can? I am very curious to know what you actually have.
If it is a regular cam spouted USMC gas can, CONCO made, I have happily bought a couple from John Barton.Possibly Wendy might want one as well.
