I found a decent Davis can. Marked USN on each side. Davis and a date (5-20-43) on the bottom. Surface rust but doesn't seem to be too bad. It has kerosene in it so I know it's not leaking.
An old post details a guy who ended up with a similar can as this one: with USN stamped from the inside out (rather than stamped from the outside in). Nobody seemed to have an explanation as to why the can is stamped from the inside out.
Does anyone have any info on this style of can? My MB will soon be painted in US Army ETO theme. I really don't have a need for this can, but I didn't have a USN can and hadn't seen a USN can before, so I brought it home.
Any help is appreciated.
Sam

Re: Davis USN gas can
I've got one of the Davis USN cans too. I'll double check if it has the reverse stamping too. I have another USN can also 1943 but I can't remember off hand it's manufacturer. I'll check later today and report.

Re: Davis USN gas can
I checked on the two USN cans I have. One was made by Davis in 1943. The other was produced by Wheeling also made in 1943. Both had the standard stamping of outside in. I don't believe I've EVER seen a Jerry Can with Inside out stamping. But who knows, there was a huge effort to produce as much of everything back in WWII and mistakes could have been made.
I have two Jerry cans made by NSI in 1943 but have dramatically different sized letters and numbers. Who knows why??

Re: Davis USN gas can
The old post about the backwards stamping was probably mine.
It's buried in storage right now, but it was a Wheeling made can, and I'm pretty sure it was dated 1943.
I will try to search for the old post to see if the images are still showing, if not I will try to get some new images up in a few months.
I will be retired soon, so I hope to have more time for such activities.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! I hope it is everything you wish!
I hope you find those pictures because the reverse stamping would be very interesting to see.
