Dates on US cans?

Just picked up a Rheem marked 20 5.2 42 at a flea market
Anybody know how to read this date? Isn't this early for a US can

20 "liter" 5.2 "gallon" 42 "1942" All my cans are marked on with either a "5" or "5 1/4" on the gallons.

Thanks, that makes sense. Glad to have a 42 to go with the jeep now.

There are 41 dated gas and water cans(thank you Bill!) so 42 is not too early. And definitely nice to have !
