Painted or stamped?
You need to post pics as there are some different fabrication details for them from different eras. Top, bottom, front and side. The folds, welds and seams give us hints to the time in which it was produced in many cases.

Chuck,
The marking is stamped. I'll post pics later.
In the meantime, can you tell me if this other one is WW2? The eBay seller told me he did not see any markings on the front lip. After doing a forum search here, "no numbers doesn't necessarily mean it's not a WW2 jerry can holder."
Thanks!
Dexter

Re: Please help ID this jerry can holder
The pics look like the WWII style to my eye. The straps/buckle are not the M38 style at all, the buckle is the WWII style....I'd say it is a WWII era at this point. There was no sign of the 42-B-xxxxx or the Dxxxxx stamped-in number on the front to the left or right of where the strap is attached?
Note the three welding spots on the side.....yours has that feature and...the method of construction, the bottom assembly and tabs and holes match an original so I feel it is circa WWII.

Both my spare can brackets have the three deep but small spot welds, with no part number anywhere on the bracket:
The one that came with the GPW has a number on the rear, and the three spot welds are larger, but shallow:
Here's all three together. The black one was found at the local thrift store for $9!:
Bottom view, except for the number and spot weld style difference on the one without the strap, all are made exactly the same:

Chuck,
In regards to my original question, here's the can that has the following stamped on the front lip: MS 53052-I USMC

Re: Please help ID this jerry can holder
That marking is unfamiliar to me and while the design of the carrier is one thing, the marking on that carrier does not look like a field mod or even a motorpool mod so it should be a mfger stamped-in marking....and that would indicate a possible USMC CONTRACT (but from what era?)....I know that an awful lot of jerry cans make by USMC (US Metal Can) are thought to be U.S.M.C (United States Marine Corps) so if anyone can identify the NUMBER stamped on it... "MS 53052-1"...perhaps it can be identified as either something for the Marines or a number put on by US Metal Can....
I have no idea myself....

Re: Please help ID this jerry can holder
MS usually designates a Military Standard designation-= it is used in aircraft to indicate parts which meet a military standard design specification. It is very possible this has been applied to newer jerry can holders as well.

Notice in the Technical Bulletin illustrated above that the title mentions "...Liquid Container..." Over the years I have accumulated about three dozen cans, usually from flea markets and yard sales. Two of those in the best condition were marked, by decal and stencil, as containing floor wax and the other one, insecticide. They did not get banged around so much as gas cans.

Re: Please help ID this jerry can holder
I tried to hit the link from the 2011 post and it is no more. I recently acquired this very holder and am trying to learn what it’s application was for.
I have a ‘45 GPW so it’s not relevant to my collection. If anyone is in need and wants to make an offer with shipping from. 95993 let me know.
