USMC CONCO CAN "water only" stencil

Post by lucakiki » Sat Oct 25, 2003 6:28 am

I recently received two 44 USMC Conco cans from John Barton.I was happy to add one to my little collection and give the other to my friend Silvano Borgogno, who was even happier, since for him adding a new can to his 300 plus shelves is an achievement.Well, after careful sanding, this notice came out, stenciled in yellow on both sides:WATER ONLY.
This would possibly prove that USMC did not have a peculiar water can,as I enquired on another post.Any thoughts?

I brought this issue up some time ago Luca.

See here:

http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... ight=water

I have a USMC photo of a USMC radio jeep on Guam that shows a large cam lock water can strapped on the passenger's step. I also have one of a guy next to a radio jeep in Saipan shaving with water in his helmet that appears to been poured from a screw top gas can. The same photo shows both a center mount cam lock in the background and a side mount cam lock on the back of the jeep.

For short term use painting a white "water" stencil on the side would work if you did not have enough large cam lock water cans around. This is what appears to have been done. If I can find the photos in my files I will send them.

Mark,I had forgot about that thread, even if I had posted in it too
And thank you for the pictures you mailed me.So it would appear that stenciling WATER or WATER ONLY was done, wether in white or yellow.Thankyou.

Hi Guys.

Mark: Could you send those pictures to me also????

Luca: Have a look at page 65 in jeeps over the pacific. One of the soldiers is sitting on a water can with painted text. There is also one at page 62, but no text.

Cheers, Frank..

Vik,I just looked at them again.Of course in the pics we cannot tell if they are common Water cans or USMC water cans ,if ever such a thing exists. The stenciling of the word Water was done in the ETO as well to Water cans, maybe as an extra caution. The stencil on a gas tank, would possibly mean ,since the spout in itself would not warn on the issue, that that peculiar can was to be used for water only.
