Re: Marking of Petrol for Overseas Destinations from the UK
Thanks Fabrizio, do you know of any with a red "80" and red "grade", such as A, B or C painted?

Hi,
I have a (rusty) can with a big orange-ish V80, another with a very small yellow stamp, 80 oct.
Look at my cans, topic is "lucky find" here on the G

Re: Marking of Petrol for Overseas Destinations from the UK
Thanks again. I was curious because I haven't seen a jerry can yet which adheres to War Department Circular No. 198, 1 September 1943, which essentially states that 80 octane (marked in red) is to be stenciled on the side under the nozzle.
Yours are more puzzling, as there is no "V". There is "AV" for aviation fuel but it did not come in 80 octane. There is a color orange specified but that was reserved for aviation fuel with an octane of 73 and motor fuel (gasoline) with an octane of 72.
If you ever run across one please let me know!

QuestMaster - THANK YOU! That book is PRECISELY what I was hoping it would be! This is an awesome book! I wish that book had more photos of the unit markings on vehicles though. I'm gonna start a new thread on that specifically.

It probably depends where they are in the supply chain I suppose.Chuck Lutz wrote:Here is a pic of those "banded" jerry-cans. I don't see any corner markings but you may have better eyes than I do:

You remember correctly Fabrizio. Some of the cans in the back of the truck are marked V80.Fabrizio wrote:The V was for winterised gasoline if I remember correctly

I notice too that the "V 80" stenciled on these cans are on the side opposite the nozzle. Just an observation. I am beginning to learn that there was the correct way and then there was the, "Who cares just get it on the can," way!

Army Way: Put the marking on the end that is not visible when pouring the fuel out of the can. Well, that makes no sense....
Private entrusted with the stencil marking: "Hmm, ya gotta see what it is when you are pouring it, so I'll put it where you can read it when you are doing that!"

On the other hand one should read what is in the can prior to pouring.

Just a little update on the colour of the Green Triangle. I believe it to be Willow Green Gloss Colour 113. It suits the colour very well with its Blue/Green base and can help understand the question whether it is blue or green in the photos. Its ANA colour is Light Blue 'Willow Green' and also known as 'Quartermaster Green'.
