Aluminum Conco Water Can

Post by Pat Gray » Sat Jun 29, 2019 3:51 pm

Could anyone help me find information on this can? Picked this can up this morning at a garage sale and it is the firs Aluminum Water can I have ever seen. Can't find a date or any other markings. Could it be post-war?

First one I've seen. I like it though. Don't have to deal with the liner peeling.

Pat,
About the only thing I remember that can pin down a date for these cans were some Life magazine photographs dated (I think) 1959.
The subject of the photo-set was in regards to a U.S.M.C. deployment and showed groups of this can type loaded on board a sea going vessel.

Agreed. :D 8)

I wish someone would reproduce the water cans in Aluminum for actual use for potable water. I like to use cans rather than plastic.

Saw four more of these at the MVPA convention in York. Seller had them for $20 each. 2 are in our reenacting group now, 1 is with a friend for his field kitchen reenacting group and the last had Marine Corps unit markings still visible and went to a Marine collector in our group. Seller says that before I got there he had already sold one. So that means at least a 1/2 dozen exist.

Dave

Dave, It WOULD be a good idea. However, it would be better to have them made from stainless steel. Back in the mid '60's the "American Process" method for making cheese slices had to completely change out all of the machines used for packaging from ALUMINUM, to stainless steel. The packaging machines that were built in the mid '50's were shedding so much aluminum that by the mid '60's the health care industry was seeing an increased number of extra early onset Alzheimer's Disease. You see, it was found that food exposed to aluminum will lead to early Alzheimer's disease.
Sorry to be a kill joy but, there you have it. :(
