restoration of SCR-300

Post by Serek22 » Mon Jul 11, 2022 11:35 am

Hello guys :)

Finally I got in my hands my own SCR-300. I have few questions about some details regarding restoration.

My radio:
292185135_415017400673421_5770235746328453081_n.jpg
First of all, I have changed latches from spring one to "normal" one. I found under the latches that there were original paint on the battery case. Probably there is no way to take off ugly dark green paint so my question is what is the proper color of the radio? OD7 is a proper one?
Could you tell me in which years there were rivets or screws for nameplates? Does modern rivets are the same as ww2 ones?

Inside of the battery box with original paint:

The other question I have is about the factor of bc-1000 part and the original one. You can see it on the picture below:
292535828_424083649631518_6820117218535722766_n.jpg
Such a factor is a proper one for ww2 scr-300? How to achieve such an effect? Because of the fact that BC-1000 part have french decals I will have to repaint the whole box and put new english decals. Is there any way to take off decals without damaging the original paint?

Could someone provide me with pictures of fully original ww2 SCR-300? Interested in many details I can restore such as factors, decals, cleanings, even the color of harnesses and stuff like that :)
I'm still looking for Pad M-391-A,even copies if anyone have such let me know :)

Thank you for any help!

With regards Jakub!

They were originally Signal Corps wrinkle green a special paint that is no longer available. All data plates were riveted so the troops could not switch plates around. Many of these were made in France 1956-1962.

The original markings were silk screened on and not decals. The dry transfer markings are the closest to original but some times difficult to apply to wrinkle paint.

Or you can use a "paint mask", which is different then a stencil. The mask has a backer, keeping the inner parts of closed letters (A,B,D,O, P, etc) in place. Once secured in place, the backer is removed. I typically use a hobbyist airbrush and apply a couple of very light coats. Allow to dry, then remove the mask. You will have to "weed" the smaller pieces from the closed letters previously mentioned.

Hi Jakub,
Here pictures of an original WWI set abandoned in an attic no far from here. Date : 1944
IMG_6322s.JPG
BC-1000-front-plate-for-import.JPG
This is the SCR-300 set that I modified (reversible) a few years ago with an MP3 player. Full description here on G503

The OD color is quite dark.
I have achieved a similar color by doing this : first spray a layer of black wrinkle paint to give the finish.
Then spray the OD color 1944 that I use for my jeep.
It gives a dark, dusty, greasy OD color like on the photos attached below.

Last year I have restored a front plate and the color is like this.Photo taken outside in natural light.

Retro-coco is really the specialist of the stencils.
I have not been able to find easy to use stencils, i.e without the need to touch-up the O's, A's etc ....

Too bad that I have no longer access to tampo-offset printing like this https://www.oberk.com/packaging-crash-c ... o-printing

Yes exactly, but I have used a kitchen oven.
If you have a bright-hot sun, there is no need for a oven.
I have just found that the wrinkle effect is more constant using a oven at about 100 deg. Celsius during about 45 minutes.
For the OD layers, I have sprayed 4 crosses layers: vertically, horizontally, oblique.
The OD layers have to be light to keep the wrinkle effect.
That is not a difficult process. You nee to respect the VHT wrinkle plus guide very carefully and it works nicely.

It is a Signal Corps depot restoration tag from either the depot in Germany or japan. It was intended for the Military Assistance Program to be given to friendly foreign governments. It has no provision for a serial number so it was not intended to be issued to US troops.
