Certainly looks to be a battery box, has a vent on one end, two prongs which may be insulated on the lid.
Is it possible the last number is a digit 0-9? a box with 53 comes up but is different (Tube holding box)
Although it possibly could have held larger tubes, it likely would have been padded for that function.
Note also it has a fairly stout set of footman loops, cannot see other side of box to see if it matches, but if they were only on one side it would mean it was carried on it's side perhaps, so no wet cells if it were a battery box...
Interesting though.

There are matching footman loops on the other side. One has remnants of a leather strap, but the orientation of the loops reminds me of chest made for the top of a pack saddle.
The numbering system for Signal Corps items is sequential. So a big clue is the 1933 date. It HAS to be BX-5, and not BX-50, or BX-51, etc, as those numbers came out much later than 1933.

More pics side by side with a 1918 dated pack saddle lantern chest. The footman loops are almost in an identical position.

Found that it is part of the RC-15 Oscillator. The RC-12 mounts on top of the BX-5 using the clips on top of BX-5.
