Crank Handle colors

Post by rgus » Thu Oct 11, 2018 6:31 pm

I have 2 sets of cranks for the GN series of radio generators. One set has black wooden handles and the other set has od. Is one WW2 and one set post war?

They were possibly repainted OD for an inspection.

Is the nomenclature (presumably GC-7) stamped or forged?

According to SIG 5 dtd 12/45 and 05/47, the earlier ones had black painted wooden (Maple) handles. The nomenclature was stamped, and the metal part was electro-galvanized. Later ones had the nomenclatures forged (the characters are raised) and a lot of them were made on NATO contracts and have -Gy or -Fr appended to the GC-7. US made ones are the same except no suffix to the GC-7. All with raised lettering that I have seen were painted OD over-all except for the short part that sticks into the generator socket. Painted ones with stamped lettering I have always assumed were overhauls but I am not certain when the handle color changed.

I got them out. The first set were made exactly as you specified. Stamped GC-6. The second set are painted and have raised letters GY- GC-7. Thanks for the information.

Is the first set actually stamped GC-6 or is it GC-7?

OK. Then each of them should have a shorter throw but a longer shank than the pair of GC-7-Gy's. They were originally made for use with GN-35 when it was installed in some box that at the moment I don't recall the nomenclature of. However, they will also work with the hand crank generator used with the TBX because their shank, unlike that of the GC-7, is long enough to clear the cover installed over the jack shaft when the generator is configured as a hand-crank unit.

Note that there is some confusion (an error) in SIG 5, which says that GC-6 is an extension to lengthen the shank of the GC-7,
