Thanks guys. Matt I send you a PM. Klaas, great Egon has one. Looks really nice, just his price is a bit above my budget I’m afraid. I would be afraid to take that to an event. ;-)

What's your budget for a working US Special Services phonograph?

Not what you want to hear, but in 1989, I went to a farm where the owner bought WW2 surplus after the war. The owner took me to a barn and inside was full of the field phonographs....all destroyed!!.. he said a couple of teenage boys got into the barn one night and just for fun, destroyed all of them with base ball bats. Now, looking back, wish I had picked through them for parts, but back then you could still find WW2 stuff, and I just moved on to his next barn full on goodies..

So sad for those cool machines to end up like that.

A similar situation happened to me many years ago. I came across a fellow at a gun show that had a huge box of demiled M1950 single burner stoves including the carry cans. There must have been 75 to 100 of them and they looked like they had been run over by a Sherman tank. The guy let me root around to see if I could make heads or tails of the parts. Maybe an hour later I was only able to salvage one nice complete stove. Like you - I kick myself for not grabbing some of the odds and ends for spare parts!

My second worse story was another gun show where someone had a stack of WW2 USMC camo shelter halves - most in pretty good shape & coloring including strong markings. Folded they were in a stack maybe 4 + feet tall. Asking price $4 to $5 apiece!! I was rather poor at the time and rationalized that I really didn't collect Marine stuff anyway so walked away. If I knew then what I know now!
