Here's a scarce piece for the WW2 gear collector: a late war Experimental 2 Quart Bladder Canteen Cover with Strap (aka "Type III")...
These were made in 1945 as the improved version of the 1943 bladder canteen covers that had a detachable hook provision ("Type I") followed by a fixed hook version ("Type II"). Ken Lewis called it the "Jungle Canteen" in his classic reference Doughboy to G.I.. This final version cover has a factory shoulder strap and no hook provision. It is missing the flexible bladder canteen. Condition is Good-VG showing age, color loss, and some staining but no damage or "issues". Very faint markings on the rear (undoubtedly "Dover Latex 1945" etc.). I've had several of the Type I covers before but not one of these.
$50 plus postage. Please PM direct if you're interested. Thanks for looking!

How hard would it be to find a canteen?

Not easy... I think there were postwar versions of that bladder type canteen as well, but none are easy to find "loose" in my experience.

I have a Vietnam era bladder canteen. I don't know what the dimensions are but getting something like that may be passable to fill the pouch Jeff has

I suppose all one would need, for display, is the piece of a bladder canteen that has the neck for a WW2-pattern cap. That's all that shows once installed. Stuff the balance with bubble wrap.
