WTB: WWII uniform and helmet

Post by Scratch » Tue Jul 13, 2021 8:18 am

Looking for an inexpensive repro uniform and helmet. Nothing fancy or super accurate, just something to wear besides clothes from Target during summer parades. Looking for pants, T-shirt, maybe a long sleeve shirt, cap and helmet. Nothing real warm, this is for the summer. Thought I'd check here before I went to Amazon or Ebay.

Or if you know of a good place to find them online, let me know please.

Axis or Allies?
German, Brit, ANZAC, Italian, USA, Canadian, Russian, Romanian, French, Indian (gas station not casino)?

If GI, just look for a set of HBTs and a late war configuration M-1 Helmet.

HBT is Herring Bone Twill fabric, also slang for the OD HBT fatigue/work uniform issued to GIs in WWII, often worn as combat uniform instead of, even over the wool service trousers and shirt. There are 3 or 4 different cuts/versions of the HBTs all issued as what was available to the supply system, ATF has details on each variant and approximate dates of issue
At The Front is one of the best, made as close to the original specs as possible:

Mid to Late War Dark OD shade 2 piece set $119:
https://www.atthefront.com/product-p/uspkgdshbt.htm
ATF is down to only Size 7 HBT Field Caps

What Price Glory is also highly regarded, more economical products, although they appear to be out of the HBT Trousers so you might wait until they get restocked then order both parts for best chance of a decent match: and they offer a package deal of shirt, pants and field cap for $125 when in stock

I assume you just want something to throw on for wear driving your GPW?

Thanks.
Yes, I just think it would feel funny driving it in a parade wearing athletic shorts and some screen printed t shirt from Target. Probably don't need the helmet but a cap would be nice.

A Danish helmet is a close copy of the M-1 helmet and French 2 buckle boots close to US 2 buckle just for what you want to do.

HBTs are a great choice for an OD colored look to go with a US or Korean war period jeep. Cotton, shirt/jacket is worn outside the trousers. Baseball type cap is practical. Use russet brown smooth leather ankle boots or rough-out suede brown ankle boots. Repros available. Canvas leggings if you want.

Another option is khaki (tan) cotton slacks and long sleeve shirt. It is possible to simulate real early WW2 uniforms using modern civilian garments but might as well buy repro uniforms from one of these vendors to get the right looking pockets, buttons, shade of tan, etc. The cotton khaki uniforms were not used as a field uniform after early 1942 but were used as warm climate Class B rear area uniforms when the HBT fatigues were not appropriate. US Army, USAAF, Navy, and USMC used these. This is a good look if one wants to put a military vehicle club or MVPA patch on the left sleeve.

Yes, civvies are fine. A combination for parades and MV events could be the M.A.S.H. TV show look with HBT or cotton OD trousers and GI boots with a Hawaiian shirt!

For value priced items, What Price Glory seems like your best choice. WW II HBT Mechanics Coveralls are versatile for Wisconsin weather. As is a wool lined Tanker Jacket. But the coveralls are not in stock at WPG.

Some other options. More expensive. But sometimes the adage of Buy cheap, buy twice, comes to mind.

Years and years ago, the guys around here who did WWII would buy the khaki work pant and long sleeve work shirt made by Dickies.
They closely resemble the US cotton Khaki uniform. Especially from a distance. Change out the khaki buttons for period brown ones and ride.
Khaki garrison caps are all over the place.
