FS: WW2 M2 Smoke Generator SOLD

Oh my... think of the havoc you could generate with this critter...

This is a WW2 U.S. Army Besler M2 Smoke Generator. It represented the first man-portable unit (note the pull-out handles front and rear) and period photos show that it was mounted in the back of jeeps as well. This example has 85-90% of the original G.I. paint and re-paint but could stand more clean up. Some dents in the removeable chamber cap too but they'll come out. Original plastic dataplate shriveled up but it's included so you can have a replica made (are you listening Lt. Horne? :D ). Likewise the lube chart decal on the end has seen better days but the exact same graphic appears in the TM and could serve as the basis for a John Brantley replica.

This rig appears to have compression and I'm guessing it'll work with minimal tinkering but I leave that to the buyer. It is missing the detachable "T" shaped diffuser on the outlet nipple but I know of at least one collector in Oregon that may be able to provide a good photo of what it looks like...

Includes two original WW2 Manuals, the correct "Half Funnel", correct style 8" Adjustable Wrench and a G.I. Bung Wrench (for the oil drum). The original, thin Canvas Cover is a bit rough but I think Ray Meldrum could make a super copy from it?

Price is $350 FOB Patagonia, AZ. This gem weighs 180 lbs (per the manual) so it might travel on a pallet via freight? I can offer free delivery to the April Tower Park (Wed-Fri) or January AZ MVCC show (I'm not setting up but will be stopping by on Saturday) if prepaid, otherwise I'll leave it at home. Please PM direct if you are interested. Thanks for looking!

Jeff,
Bring it to the Camp Delta meet at Tower Park next April and run it! We could publicize it on the official activity schedule as a demonstration. I would think the price will go up after you demo it. Let me know.

No idea. A freight company could (should?) be able to quote a price (180 lbs + 20 lbs for the tools + standard pallet weight). I can get it to Tucson for a better freight pick-up option (zip 85705).

I know this is an old thread but not much info out there on these. Got one out of a friends basement recently and even though it is brand new from 1944, it has still taken quite a bit of fussin with to get it going. Before I fully fire this thing up, does anyone here have any first hand info on these? Would love to hear it.

Look for the manual (depicted in the photo above). It will hook you up.

Got it working. The vastness of the desert does not do it justice but still fun

I just watched your video. Very cool, lotsa smoke, nice background accompaniment. What is the name of the song you used?

That is AWESOME. Working like she was meant to! I can only imagine what the larger, CCKW-mounted units put out!

Any video at ground level by unit. That was neat. Reminds me of mosquito control down here in 60's and 70's they had Cushman scooters and would fog the streets. We would jump on out bikes and follow them in the smoke.

I did not do the edit so don't know the name of the song. I will email the guy and ask. The thing is totally capable of producing more smoke but I jetted it down to reduce the risk of frying the main burner coil. Will look for some ground footage. Here is another edit the guy did but I do not like the music as much and it is a bit wonky. We were messing around with stuff to try to get an effect with an explosion and it did not go as planned.
