Found a cache of 1970's C-Rats and 1980's MRE's
Clearing out my MIL's attic today I found a cache of C-Rations and MRE's we had stashed there in the early 1980's. Long forgotten, the boxes were unmolested although some of the fruit cans in the c-rations had fermented and burst, staining the individual boxes. I guess we thought they would be the key to surviving the Zombie Apocalypse.
Looking at the individual ration boxes I thought that anyone who served during Vietnam or the Cold War will fondly remember 'Ham and Eggs Chopped, with Water.' How about 'Turkey or Chicken, Boned?' 'Ham and Lima Beans' - anyone?
I think I'll put a case of 12 meals in the back of the M151 and display it at shows. People never tire of looking at rations!
The MRE's were the earliest brown-bag versions of the rations. Things like dehydrated fruits and meat patties were replaced in later versions of the meals. I remember eating pork patties without re-hydrating them and having them swell like 'pop-rocks' in my mouth.
I'll offer some of the cases at our spring sale in April. I don't plan on eating them. Unless the Zombies appear in the next couple of weeks!

My Uncle sent me some in the 70's when he was in the Ohio National Guard. I don't remember too much except I did get the best one which was Spaghetti with meat sauce. The history of rations is always an interest to me. Boy the stuff now is amazing.

I did a display a few years ago with my vehicles. A guy looked at my vehicles, and told me he had something for me. later that day he returned with an unopen case of C rats from 1964. the case was still wire wrapped!
I have them upstairs in my Vietnam display.
Stuff is still out there!
