Post by 199th MP » Fri Aug 02, 2019 3:58 pm

i have a pup tent set with wood stakes and three piece poles, but the poles are linked together, and have a sliding metal tube to lock them in place when set up. i have never seen anything like this before. can anyone tell me when these were in use?

There is mention of a folding pole, tent, shelter half. In the ETO collectors guide. Picture is not great but it looks like a cord joins the sections. It also mentions it was replaced in 1944 that it was replaced with 3 sections of wood. For what that is worth. It also shows the sections are unpainted. Page 110 bivouac equipment

Folding poles are early war indeed.

I have some of these, natural wood, parkerized steel. I have seen 1944 dates on others. I have mine packed away and don't know what dates are on them. They could represent any period during the war and probably some years before. The three piece versions came out gradually as the war progressed, and an expert would have to be consulted to know if OK for a 1942 or 1943 theme. I have seen the later ones with OD paint.

Early war pup tents were open on one end, closed on the other. Later war they were made so they could be closed on both ends. Early tents most likely tan or light OD, later mostly darker OD. Like the direction webbing color was going.
