AM I EXCENTRIC OR WHAT?

Post by Joe Gopan » Tue Oct 30, 2018 7:28 pm

Another of my prized WWII items is a replica 100 Lb Bomb by "Bombs Away", it is setting on a display stand on top of my piano, it used to be part of my M-1 Bomb Lift display.

Depends on who is stopping by...

The visiting pianist wonders "how does he tune that piano with that thing on top"...?

The visiting ordnance collector thinks "must be a replica, otherwise the piano would be kindling. He needs to invest in the REAL thing"...

Everyone else doesn't even notice it because it's par for the course for a neighbor that drives a "big old Army truck".

Now... paint it up as rusty and bury it, nosed in, in the front yard... and things might be different.

Well, there are two different stories I have heard about that idea... One was a pilot in Vietnam- USAF, career Air Force, and his house on base in-country had one of those bombs with the vanes which pop out to slow it down planted that way in the front yard. The other was another pilot, I believe USN, who, in the 1940s or 50s, while in pilot training was ordered to go to the Squadron CO's house, and pick up an inert large caliber round (I want to say 16", but I believe that was too big.) In any case, he, along with several of his friends, went to the house, and retrieved the very heavy ordnance, and got it into his car, and drove it to the base. They were then ordered to get it up to the third deck of their barracks, and polish it to a high shine, which was to be maintained. He realized this had all been a "team building exercise"... So, on the day of graduation, it was now in position on the roof of the building, through more (but unauthorized) "team building". As they stood in formation, their C.O. looking at them, he screamed "NO!!!!" as it gently toppled forward, fell three stories, and was half buried in the lawn in front of the barracks, urged on by an unseen conspirator... Last the guy saw, it was sticking out of the ground- and that was years later, IIRC.

I have recently re-read about both of those incidents in memoirs of WWII of Vietnam, but don't remember which...

Actually, I think you're fine.

I have several shell casings ranging from 20mm to 75mm sitting on my upright piano.
All perfectly normal, really, yes.

I think most of us are a bit eccentric. Although nothing to do with this hobby, my old manager at work used to walk around his house dressed in a Star Trek uniform.( i think ill stick to jeeps).

No, you're fine. Don't worry about it.

(Of course, I might not be the guy qualified to give such advice.)

Mark, thanks for the compliment. That is about one half of it (the bigger half). I had it set out for my BA-DA BA-DA BING BANG Rally.

Golden, who needs a 16" when you have a nuclear hand grenade?

I use to get weird looks from friends back when we first married. They would look at this lamp made from .50bmg, 60mm mortar and and 105 shell casing head. Next to it I kept a Japanese hand grenade turned into a lighter. People actually asked if they were real!

I lost the HG and the lamp is disassembled in some box in storage.

Oh, yes, you are "eccentric" and watch your spelling! :D :D

I think you are good but I have been told you are not Eccentric unless you are rich. If poor you are just nuts.

No, not on the piano, but in my back garden!
Really the wrong season for the photo's; looks much nicer in summer with everything in bloom.

US 100 Lbs, dropped on the (then Luftwaffe) airbase Twenthe in the Netherlands in 1944. Retrieved in 2001 while clearing the runway from UXO during reconstruction.
