Children's clothing question

Post by Andy Cole » Sun Aug 12, 2018 1:07 pm

I have three children. 11 year old boy, 9 year old girl, and 5 year old girl.
The two oldest love to tag along with be to living history events or displays.

Where could I find somewhat appropriate mid 40's attire for them,?

Period civilian clothes are pretty expensive when you can find them. Your best bet is to find patterns and make or have made clothing from that. One thing some people in our group have done is to use late 30s/early 40s French clothing patterns and give their kids Displaced Persons tags.

Since it is running several times this summer, watch "The Natural" with Robert Redford. There are lots of good shots of the kids clothing from the era. Another thing to do is watch "The Little Rascals." Both should give you a good idea of how to dress your kids.

Go on You Tube and look up Yesterday Today and they post many many pictures of a wide variety of eras and times.

If you look at the fashion photos of those years, you'll see that nothing in particular has changed. That's why there are two options - you can sew it yourself or redesign it. There are many online stores as well where you can find clothes in this style. My favorite so far is kamelino, the quality is one the best and my children look amazing wearing these clothes. Now I wanna order a spring collection, once is starting to get warmer outside.

Honestly, just Google "1940s vintage children's clothes" or even more simply "1940s children's clothes."

There are tons of sewing patterns listed for sale on eBay. There's also lots and lots of original girls, infants and toddler's clothes for sale. Boy's clothes seem to be scarce, but there are some items.

The search will also turn up a huge number of period photos for comparison with available clothing items that could be good matches and even some websites for fans of vintage clothing that discuss styles and have links to new items that are close matches for the originals.

Thrift Store.
Dark Corduroy pants, any white shirt and black leather sole shoes for the boy. add a floppy hat or worn fedora.
Sunday dresses in any plain color would do for the girls, maybe some knickers (stockings)
Look at "Our Gang" comedy for perfect examples of what US kids were wearing. Not all things were hand sewn by Mom... Sears and Wards had been selling mail order everything since the 1870's? or so.
