MESS OPERATION IN FIELD (ref. TM 10-405/ TM 10-406)
Hello, I've been experimenting with "Military" cooking the past few months, I have been breaking down recipie's from TM 10-412 Army recipies ( for 100 personell). I have been looking at the "Field" section for examples to copy. there are great images throughout this section I copied an "Oil Drum Oven" since I can't find any M-1937's for the life of me...here's some images. It burned about 45 minutes on one charge of wood getting to a maximum of 420-425 deg F. for aprox 15 minutes without any additional wood.

Here is an interesting book you may want to get. it's called how to feed an Army and it has recipes from the Revolutionary War through Desert Storm. They have it in amounts for 100 and for 10. Isbn-13 978-0-06-089111-4

Re: MESS OPERATION IN FIELD (ref. TM 10-405)
Have you tried cooking anything in the oven? I have TM 10-405, and just ordered TM 10-412 but what would have been a normal meal in the field if they had a M-1937 or similar? I'm going to a scout fund raiser in a few weeks time, if I can get the oven to work it would be neat to offer them a WW2 meal.
Ps where did you get the flue from? Thanks

Re: MESS OPERATION IN FIELD (ref. TM 10-405)
So far only a "dry run" and baked burgers in a pan...I have a frozen turkey in the fridge I am ichin' to try out. As for recipes I have been using the TM10-412.
As for the "Flue" I obtained 5 inch diameter heating/cooling duct (A.K.A. Flashing) from a local hardware store, it was 36 inches long. It originally was flat and I had to bend it into a tube shape, it interlocked itself into an integral groove to make a tube. I then cut a 45 degree angle on the ends down by the fire so it would "flow" exaust gasses outward easier. I worked really good, but it will consume a decent amount of fuel during longer 4-6 hour bake times...

Re: MESS OPERATION IN FIELD (ref. TM 10-405)
Here's my Mobile Mess station crates that can be loaded up and deployed anywhere as temporary tables or storage space. Nothing fancy, just expediant boxes to load up supplies, fuel, water and Go!!! I still need to practice more cooking and finish my G506 to put it all into...Ha! Minor details!
I also need to scrounge up some tent poles and canvas for an improvised "Fly/Tent" shelter too, its all under a haybarn right now in the mid-day shade. That dang sun can be horrible without shade.
Have food, will travel.

I bet the neighbours love it when you get that thing a smokin!
You can keep your M1937 petrol/gas bombs....I lit many of them with trepidation & saw a buddy near burned to death, when one exploded & covered him with burning fuel.
They did have some in Reno @ the big surplus outfit Twin Cities Surplus 1675 East 4th Street Reno (888) 323-5630

I only smokes bad when it is first fired up, after that it isn't bad. It impressive to see the exaust... the draft makes flame "jets" like an afterburner, nice conical flame jets about 8-10 inches long!

Re: MESS OPERATION IN FIELD (ref. TM 10-405)
Had some hands on with the M1937 field range over the weekend, out of the 3 we have one working partially, all need attention - its a sweaty experience pumping these to 50 psi ! Following the starting procedure from the TM 6 half turns of the mixing valve 3 half turn of air - it fires just fine, fins placed under distributor for 3mins to preheat, but when I turn fuel valve on and try turning off mixing valve (with this on pressure drops FAST) flame goes out. Also keeping the pressure between 30 -50 psi whilst flaming is VERY hard work. One final observation which made me shut it down was the fuel cap has an air vent, this vent became a pilot light ( freaked me out fuel cap with a flame!) so my question here is am I doing something wrong when turning down mixing valve after turning on fuel and should the vent on the fuel cap be a pilot light?
We did have success with the M67 immersion heater, also scary to start, but works well - heated trash can of water in no time.

Re: MESS OPERATION IN FIELD (ref. TM 10-405)
Here's a few pic's of the initial mess items I have dredged up...I have more utenciles and cookware but I need to document them still.
This collection started with the "Mess kit" a.k.a. foot locker from E-bay, I found the modified 1942 "Abel & Bach" foot lockerfoot locker w/ 8 mess hall plates dated 1941/1943. The Stove is aprox. 1948 (Coleman didn't start the use of their Parrelelagram untill 1948), The 2 large pots are "U.S.N. Carrollton", the cups have no markings, The mess kit is made by "Leyse", the tool roll is from a "20 man Detatchment" stove kit. One intersting modification someone did was to make the dividers and a "insulated" compartment" on the top, the metal liners are old Prestone engine coolant gallon containers dated 1939! I use these for dry good storage (i.e. paprika, ketchup, mustard ect.), not for food storage.
My target personell I am trying to gear up for is 8-12 pairs of boots over 48-72 hour evolutions...
I have since acquired another "Post-war" Coleman Identical to this one, and a partial M1937 oven utencil assortment, and other durable goods for mess use.
