Operation Market Garden 75th Anniversary

Post by Rustman » Mon Jan 07, 2019 8:20 am

17-19 May 2019 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA will be the Warbirds Over The Beach Airshow https://militaryaviationmuseum.org/airshows/wotb/ This is a great three day event held on a grass strip. The air field is home to an original German hanger and an RAF control tower in addition to the fascinating collection of aircraft and vehicles.

This year the 101st Airborne Recon reenactors and the Capital Wing of the Airmen's Preservation Society are teaming up to honor the 75th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden. This includes recreating the briefing show here!

We are portraying 101st Airborne and the 53rd Troop Carrier Wing. Within those two larger organizations are service units such as the 1075th Signal Company and the 1465th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company (2nd Echelon Automotive Shop). Additionally we have Special Services, a kitchen and recreation facilities. We are looking for additional reenactors and vehicle owners to join us in recreating these and other elements. The museum is seeking more vehicles and we are also looking for MP's to help with crowd control. The control tower is within the restricted air space for flying, but is open to the public in the morning and then again in the late afternoon after the actual flying. But in between once the briefing is done we will need to move the public out of that restricted space.

This year will be full of D-Day anniversary events. But we wanted to honor a different major operation for airborne, aviators & their support. If you are interested in joining us with or without a vehicle let me know.

Thanks

We have also changed our annual battle of the Bridge at Remagen, 1945 in Tidioute ,PA to MARKET GARDEN 1944, Bridge at Nijmegan. This combat reenactment is both private tactical and public town / bridge battle on the Allegheny River. All GI , Commonwealth and Germans forces are invited as to Dutch civilians. We have getting alot of intrest for the 75th Anniversary. Our new website will be up soon.

Wow, great shot, Matt!
Is Mark Hewis still a member of that group? I knew the guy for a short while back in the 90s.
I had no clue that control tower was there, I really wish I'd gone to check it out when I was in the area for several days in 2017!

Pat,

That's great. I''m glad to see another event recognizing Market Garden. I don't do tactical reenacting (yet) so I haven't attended your event in the past, but I have looked it over on the website. Looks like a good one.

Lee,

Unfortunately I do not know him. Capital Wing has been through a few iterations. I did not get really involved until about 2010. If you mean 101, then I really only know one person there.

Wanted to bump this back up and make another call. We are looking for all kinds of US reenactors. Within our USAAF camp we have room for you in the maintenance tent, running phones/PA systems, as a pilot or air crew, as ground crew as a weatherman, MPs... The list goes on. If you are a reenactor, or thinking about being one, if your unit isn't attending this show but you'd like to send me a message. I'm pretty sure there's a place for you and your Jeep (if you have that too) in our camp.
