Think you're a good shot?

Post by raymond » Fri Sep 23, 2022 5:19 am

These guys just set the world record with a 4.4 mile shot using a custom built rifle. 8)
From the pull of the trigger, roughly 24 seconds elapsed before forward spotters heard the telltale plunk of a 422-grain copper bullet piercing the thin metal target.

The shooter was 4.4 miles away, a distance so great, the Earth’s rotation came into play.

It was a new world record for a rifle shot, set by the Jackson-based Nomad Rifleman team led by Schott Austin and Shepard Humphries. The shot was made with a custom-built rifle chambered for the .416 Barrett cartridge.

A 4x8ft target on the 69th shot.

I feel like some artillery guys could do that in a lot less shots

At that distance the bullet is basically free falling back to earth after it reaches it's max ordinate of trajectory, it is at max distance the bullet can possibly go.
I've called for a lot of artillery; sure, a 155 can hit a 4x8 target at 4 miles away, because once you are within 200 meters, you fire for effect. And with a 100 meter casualty producing radius, you don't have to hit it.

How close did you come on the 68th shot?

After that one (or even the 50th shot), it is just "bracketing" the target.

Old shooter's joke follows:

I shot low on the first shot.

I shot high on the second shot.

I shot to the left on the third shot.

I shot to the right on the fourth shot.

I missed on the fifth shot.

I think it is great. I know in Pennsylvania they have some long range shooting across valleys but not 4+ miles. Barrett just celebrated 40 years in business and nice article in the American Rifleman about it.

The Anzio rifle is a a 200# dog. I have a Lahti barrel chambered in 50HVT 14.5 russian necked down to .50. Runs a 750gr AMAX at 5200 ft at the muzzle (or close to the muzzle). Not sure what it would be at 4 miles, but with 600gr of powder it could be a factor?
