The northridge sight is selling reproductions. Are you looking for a real one or a repro?
I ask because 99.9999% of the ones you see for sale are fakes or repros. By fakes I mean someone passing off a repro for a real one. If you want a real underwood flip be prepared to look for years and know what to look for. You’re going to pay probably $3-400 or more for one.
But the sad part is you’ll likely pay that much for what someone claims to be a real one only to end up with a fake. I’m not trying to discourage you but rather inform. A website or auction listing flips in quantities greater than 1 are 100% without a doubt repros. Especially if they’re priced at $100 ish.

Re: WTB: M1 Carbine rear site
Well, i got it. It sure looks real to me, all the markings are correct,it has the "S" on the side and the "U" where it should be, the finish is the same shade as the gun but looks aged like one should expect. It's dirty like it has been stored a long time.dantheman wrote: ↑Tue Feb 01, 2022 6:24 pmThe northridge sight is selling reproductions. Are you looking for a real one or a repro?

Is it possible that when they went through the rebuild that when they removed the flip up sights for adjustable ones that they kept then and had a large amount that someone got a hold of?

Care to post any pics? I can tell you right away if it’a real or not. I certainly hope it is, that would be awesome for you. I’ve just become very cautious and doubting over my experience with rare carbine parts.

Re: WTB: M1 Carbine rear site
For the sake of clarity and for anyones possible future reference I’ll post what I told Gary by text.
I checked against my reference material and pictures I have saved of known originals and I’m certain that this is a reproduction. The dead giveaway is the serifs S. Underwood would have used a sans serifs S and it would have been much smaller. The only company to use a serifs S was very early production inland’s. It’s also too “perfect”. The staking around the pivot pin isn’t quite right either. It shows no signs of ever being installed so that’s another giveaway.
There are no stores of NOS flips so any that you come across should almost absolutely be takeoffs. If there are no signs of a type 1 sight ever being installed (finish worn off in the dovetail or on the bottom) it’s another pointer for it being a repro.
Additionally, many folks don’t want to discuss these points as it gives repro manufacturers more data to make ever increasingly convincing copies. There’s nothing wrong with buying a repro flip sight, as a repro, for a decent price and knowing that’s what you’re getting. Paying $$$ for these and thinking you’re getting a real one is extremely frustrating.

Re: WTB: M1 Carbine rear site
Dantheman,
You are correct, there is also another "tell" that led me to believe this is a repop. Even though it is a reproduction, it will serve fine for what it is.
Northridge is known throughout the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine communities for selling repop parts as originals. Usually, his description is just shy of stating the parts are original 1940's factory production.

Re: WTB: M1 Carbine rear site
Thanks for all the input. Looks like I got had. On the other hand it's close enough and better than the adjustable site. I installed it today and after a little adjustment it shoots right on.
