color of the Bren gun

Post by Frank USMC » Wed Jun 30, 2021 1:32 pm

I know, real stupid question, but what was the color of the WWll Bren gun? Having one rebuilt, and the gunsmith just asked if I wanted it in Gray?

Len Savage built my MK3 and the finish is parkerized topped with paint. My dummy MK1 is also paint over park. Both are black. I have read that paint over park was standard on BRENs and Stens. Good luck with the build. By the way my Dad has a Nice 1940 BSA M20 and he has a basket case 1944.

1937 to 1944 Enfield should be blued/browned. 1944 Mk3 on will be Phosphate with a Sunc over coat.
1940 to 42 Mk1 Inglis should be blued/browned. Mk2 should be Phosphate.
1941 Lithgow should be blued/browned. 1942 blue phased out to Manganese Phosphate.
1943 on should be a Manganese Phosphate.
1941 on Monotype/Daimler I think were all blue/browned.

In service, certain parts and bodies could be painted for protection but it wasn’t the norm.

Barrels were never painted in Sunc until post war.

When I acquired my 1945 Bren it was still in the grease and was painted a semi gloss black. I dont remember the manufacture.
