Help identify pre ww2 bullet

Post by D_Conrad » Sun Apr 04, 2021 6:10 pm

I found this while metal detecting at my dads place. Its copper cased and longer than a 45 ACP. and is rimmed. Any ideas on age or what it is? It measures the diameter of a 45. There is also no headstamp on the casing.

I thought that too, but the ones I saw weren't rimmed. I just thought it's odd there is no headstamp on it

Looks like .45 Schofield to me.
V/R W. Winget

I looked at bullet charts comparison photos I downloaded a while back.

"45 Smith & Wesson is a revolver cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson for their S&W Model 3 Schofield top-break revolver. It is similar to the . 45 Colt round though shorter and with a slightly larger rim, and will generally work in revolvers chambered for that cartridge"
Base diameter: .477 in (12.1 mm)
Rim thickness: .060 in (1.5 mm)
Neck diameter: .477 in (12.1 mm)

Then again....might be?

I think you're right. My dads house is right next to a natural hot spring that was used as a rest stop for soldiers going up to the nearby mountain. Here is some rough history

History of the park says, around 1870 , it was used by the US Army as a resting spot before moving on to Mt Lemmon ,soldier camp.

The copper jacket leads to the time frame of the 1800s as something else I have read stated that the change from copper to brass occured officially around 1880.
