M8C Spotter Restoration

Post by prc148 » Sat Mar 06, 2021 3:18 am

I have an M8C that was welded back together by the original owner for display. I’d like to reactivate it but need some assistance: the welder did not align the receiver pieces correctly and it needs to be cut and welded. They are a hair off and a bolt will not slide. I have all the internals but the receiver is not correct. Is there anyone out there who specializes?

Another question: has anyone ever restored the Springfield receiver stampings on the M8C? The original welder messed them up....,UGH!

Last one; restoring the barrel, it’s all there but welded together. Are there any original hen’s teeth M8C barrels still floating around? I haven’t seen any in a long time. I’m sure it can’t be a shooter ever again but looks good though.

Since it is a "firearm", or will be once it can fire, only you can reactivate it; no one can do it for you unless they have a manufacturers license, because you are "making" a firearm. You can make all the non restricted firearms you want, but only for your personal use. The receiver needs to be cut and TIG welded back, over a close fitting mandrel. then possibly re heat treated. Markings can be engraved back on. You will need a new made barrel. I know of no gunsmith doing these. I would contact Bob Landies at Ohio Ord; he does all kinds of weird stuff and will know.

If you are interested, I pretty sure that I have a couple of live and inert round for you M8C. Would be cool to display when you finish your project.
I will check tonight. PM if interested.

No luck with OOW and left a message with Sebu about barrels (my cut barrel reads: SA D 7267116 1 56 Y 81 A (firing proof “P”) ). Will post updates and photos. I have most of the internals but am missing one recoil rod. Might have to give Sarco a call.

Unfortunately, Numerich mostly lists all the parts they don’t have in stock.

You might need to get a barrel, have it reamed and cut to your needed specs. I know Jeff Hays (http://www.riversbendguncompany.com/) doesn't have the reamer (Mark Serbu might) but Jeff might be able to point you in the right direction for a barrel using a current manufacturer.
Have you called Lilja and asked them? They make .50 BMG barrels.
