FS: Neat USGI Pistol Range Box SOLD

Post by AZ Jeff » Sun Jan 13, 2019 1:24 pm

Here is a very cool, USGI (as far as I can tell), Pistol Range Box for your consideration...

Image

This heavy duty, 17" x 13" x 10" wood box is built like a signal corps chest -- web strap, closure clasps, reinforced corners -- but configured for pistol shooting. Has a riveted-on web strap in OD#7 with a cast metal adjusting buckle.Note the (factory) hasp on the front...

Image

Interior has a pull-out tray that supports four pistols. Upper front folds up to reveal a pivoting metal bracket on the inside that (I believe) is used to retain a spotting scope (which then rests in the lower, front of the chest once the lid is closed).

Image

Rear has an access door to the interior that secures from the inside. There are vertical channels inside that suggest a missing, simple, thin partition that would divide the lower half, front from rear. If this isn't USGI I'll be surprised. The construction also suggests that it's old -- probably 50s. Condition is VG with some age and wear and a postwar re-paint. GREAT, practical range chest that weighs in at 17 lbs.

$85 plus postage. Please PM direct if interested. Thanks for looking!

*** SOLD

Nope. But whatever you put in it... you can lock up. I'm pretty certain this is a range box. The rear access would facilitate the spotting scope tripod (for example).

Boy what a find. You can see a lot of old pic's of the era with those boxes in matches when you were taught marksmanship. I think Pachmayer made a version. I think the scope mounted on the lid. I just looked and on the cover of a NRA clinic series. Three gun bullseye pistol shooting #7 booklet I have it shows a firing line with those cases and the scopes on the lid. Boxes are black and shades of brown. Published 1987

We had these exact boxes when I was on the Ft Knox pistol team in the 70s. Your spotting scope mounts on the lid (you can see the mount base on it) so when you open it, it is in position for you to see the target with. No tripod.
