Question on privacy in California (firearms) ?

Post by YLG80 » Sat Jan 12, 2019 1:53 am

I was searching the web for jeep's archives when I've found a curious file, at least curious to me!
It's an Excel file listing with the complete firearms owner's data in California.(3002 owners !)
For us in Europe with the GDPR, it's a clear violation of privacy. (General Data Protection Regulation)
Do you have such a restriction in CA? Or is that a consequence of a Constitution amendment?

If it's a leak, I'm going to shoot a mail to these guys and ask them to better secure their server.
It's really easy to find the updated data for each year up to October 2018.
Google has automatically found the link to the xls file of 01/2015.
To me that's also really an invitation to burglars. They can even give you a phone call just to be sure that you are not in-house  .

It shouldn't be available to the general public.
I'm in Ca. and I don't want my information floating about.
What's the link maybe I'm on the list.

It seems to be more related to brokers, dealers, manufactures etc ... and it's a public information in the US :) !
But there are individuals listed in these files.
I've found the path to get these files for each US state.
You can use the public web page to get these Excel files.
From that page https://www.atf.gov/firearms/listing-fe ... -licensees
Select what you want and click Apply.

Well, I'm not sure. ATF does what it likes. Maybe there's a provision in the application process to make personal info public.

Yup, this is a list of the Federal Firearms License holders (FFL) in whatever state you would like to look at. These licenses and the information associated with them are all public accessible.

An FFL is a license for a individual (person) to sell firearms as a business in theUnited States. Most of the licenses listed, especially in Ca. are a store front operation and not necessarily a home address.
