CONFIRMATION? Does the early pre-WWII Lavine Gear Ben Hur trailer use 6.50x20s? other ?s

Post by DDTrustee » Thu Dec 15, 2022 11:44 pm

the old tires on the Levine Gear 'baby' Ben Hur I have are 6.50x20s. the G518 manual says 7.00x20s for the 1 AT. Ben Hurs but the rims on the regular Ben Hur at 6 bolt and the rims on the 'baby' are 5-bolt....
Also, the picture of the 'baby' in the TM 9-510 shows the smaller trailer with a bent metal front leg like on the MBT....other folks have commented that the early trailers had a metal from landing gear leg?
Comments appreciated...I'm trying to restore the one I have to haul around behind my carryall.

Is there any such thing as an inexpensive 6.50X20 tire tube and flap??????????????????

It was my Dads choice to install 6.5x20 tires. My guess is thats what was on it when he bought it. I suppose the cheaper 6x20 would work or not. Have to use one of those tire/rim size websites to make sure.

He purchased his from Coker. The prices sure have gone up, and I don't think it's a Putins fault. Don't forget to look at ordering from a company like jegs. You can get free shipping and pay the same price for the tire.

The tires have been on a few trips from Washington to California. and from Washington to AZ when I moved here. They are wearing well and look great. It is almost a sure thing they would have been civilian tires on prewar stuff.

I know there are cheaper options, but they are marked made in the USA (used to be?) Firestone, gum dipped tire. If you don't plan on keeping the trailer, you will never get money out of spending 700 plus on tires, but they look authentic. Wish I would have bought a spare set a few years ago. Seems like they were around $225.

By the way. I need a hubcap if you come across a spare during your search for parts.

Check this out. I am Joe Smith on Facebook and Eldon the FB page post owner has this trailer sold to another MVPA member. I used to own this trailer. They are quite rare. When I owned it it was already restored but no canvas or top bows were on it.

Lavine Gear Co Utility Trailer Model 40-17, SN 2178, Delivered March 1940, GVW 2700, Payload 1500

I bought that trailer in the link from an old time MVPA member Dave Binkley in Ohio. He said it came from the US Military Academy the famous "West Point" in Highland Falls NY on the Hudson. It is a very very rare trailer. Probably one of the best, condition wise anywhere. I towed that home from Ohio to Panama City, Florida. Bob Stopka MVPA # 3986
