WWII Ben Hur G527 Water Trailer For Sale

Post by John Schroeder » Mon Aug 15, 2022 3:14 pm

1945 Springfield Auto Works G-527, 250-gallon U.S. Army WWII water trailer. It is an aluminum body trailer recently restored to factory condition. Springfield Auto Works built a total of 1,541 water trailers and only 342 in 1945. Comes complete with a new old stock (NOS) correct water pump, NOS pick-up hose and bell strainer, aluminum manhole strainer, muslin fine sediment strainer (repo), NOS tail lights, complete wire harness, new faucets and new tires. Also includes a reprint of the TM9-883, original 1944 ORD 7-8-9 SNL G-527, original 1953 ORD 9-SNL G-527, canvas water bucket, original data plates (repo ones with correct data are on the trailer), two NOS axle washers, a set of NOS axle seals and a field expedient locking system for the tank (not put back during restoration). The original USA number was found on the back of the tank during restoration. Inside of the tank was dry ice blasted for cleanliness and appearance.

You will notice in the picture the landing wheel is missing. It is getting a final coat of paint today and then will be assembled. There is also a set of straps to secure the water hook-up hose to the bed being made at Beachwood Canvas Works based on an original set a friend was able to provide. Those will be included in the sale.

Cost is $8,500. I am located near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I can assist with transportation, local pick-up, or I may be available to deliver it with some advance notice.

John,,
Very nice trailer. I don't doubt the amount of work that went into this trailer, am very impressed with the NOS pump (I need one for mine), and really like the looks of it. I am just curious regarding your thoughts on the pricing. I think it would be a record price for a member of the 1-ton trailer family, and am convinced that it would take all of that to do a proper restoration on any of the ones I have owned to take it to that level. But since I have seen the 1 ton cargo trailers struggle to make it past $3500, when it takes more than that to get one to full restoration, I am curious how the price on this one will be received. This is not to criticize the price or dispute it in any way- I am just curious on your thoughts on how it will be received in the collector community. Thanks much for sharing!

Best Regards,

John, I honestly had no idea where to start with the pricing. I have never seen a fully restored water trailer for sale to compare it against. The trailer itself was only $550 when I bought it but since then I have put thousands into the restoration. Parts are difficult, but not impossible to find. Restorers are more and more resistant to selling hard to find parts these days. Part of my logic in setting a high price was to separate the tire kickers/photo collectors from the series buyers. Next week I am listing it on the European websites for sale. It will be more work to coordinate shipping.

Thanks Hammerhead and DDTrustee. If I had the space and a vehicle big enough to pull it I would keep it, but I need to get it to someone who will tow it in a parade or take it to a reenactment once in a while.

I look forward to seeing it. And hopefully judging it. Two years ago there were no trailers for judging. Last year I got to go through an M-416 trailer. But it will be nice to look at something larger.

Update: This trailer was judged at the MVPA Convention in Des Moines and received a Factory Class Master Award with 98.72 points. Since then I found and added an original set of six brackets for the bows to the frame.
