Finished rack project

Post by reeg » Sat May 01, 2021 4:06 pm

Decided to go a different route with my BenHur. I painted a matte black color with 319 olive drab stenciling. Normally I’m all about making vehicles period correct but the black will go well with my Ram. I picked up red oak from a local saw mill instead of white oak or ash. I just like the looks of red oak even though it’s not as hardy outdoors.

All the rack hardware was more work than I expected. Fortunately I’ve been blacksmithing as a hobby for a while and have a coal forge to heat metal. Hammered out a landing leg bracket too since mine was missing and they are also impossible to find. Next up is tires and wiring.

Looking good. I am excited to work on the racks on my own trailer in a few weeks time.

Nice work!
How many differences are there between the steel bed trailers and wood bed when it comes to racks and top bows? I've got a wood bed one that's mostly complete but there will be a few pieces of hardware that I will need to find or make.

I don't believe there are any differences in the racks, top bows etc between the two kinds of trailers. A copy of the SNL G518 is an invaluable resource. It's the parts listing for EVERY single part and piece of hardware on the trailer. It will tell you the exact size bolt you need and what kind of finish (cadmium, zinc, plain steel etc). My company has a few wood trailer specific parts for sale and hope to add more in the near future. Yours looks to be a very restorable example. Chad Phillips of the 33rd Signal Construction Battalion reenactment group restored a wooden one several years ago. His Facebook page has a bunch of great information on the restoration of wooden trailers.
