I have to think ahead for lead time if I'm going to make Plymouth, so after exploring the 3 options for canvas, I eliminated one for not good promptness. My historical favorite, of which my command car top is made, is almost 3 times the price of Worthing in the U.K.. Part of what makes this pencil out is a favorable exchange rate right now, partially offset by the U.K. 20% tax. Ouch! (Thought we were highly taxed in CA., nope). When I requested a quote, John said he would send me a sample, and I have been waiting to compare to paint and the Beachwood color. This is an example off of Worthing's website.
Image
The canvas: top is Worthing, I think darker than OD7. Bottom is Beachwood light shade. The paint is 33070.
Image
Pretty stark difference.
Image
I like this, and am going to try Worthing. My only hesitation were the web straps vs. leather that BW offers. I asked John if he would do that for me and he agreed.

Your trailer looks great Tim. I am waiting on a Tarpaulin from the Worthings too. I prefer canvas that is darker and more along the lines of O.D. than sand. Jon told me via E-mail, that they were going to start a run of Trailer Tarps soon. This was back in Jan., but who knows when that will really happen. They are very busy there.

Thanks. I was wondering if they wait until they have a bunch of impatient Americans all wanting the same tarp, then go into production. So ours will be in the same batch, hope it's soon.

These are one of my favorite scores so far on this project. NOS taillight brackets from (due to possible litigation this name is blocked). The previous name was blocked by the site for some reason. He is a long time great resource, in this case kind of out of his jeep specialty. Never hurts to ask, right?
Image
They have a slight bend to them, so I studied some original photos to see which way they go.
Image
This will work well.

Now for taillights.

Started thinking about lighting. This is the original set up. Standard WW2: Left: service tail, service stop, blackout tail. Right: blackout stop, blackout tail.
Image
I need to be able to tow this on the highway, and I would like 2 service stop and taillights, and will be able to have turn signals with the setup I have in mind. Since my command car is a 12 volt radio car, the decision to go 12 volt is easy, and obviously will work with any other modern vehicle also. Once that decision is made, it wasn't hard to jump to using 2 left-hand cans and doors, as well as use the 12 volt LED service tail and stop lights I bought at the swap meet.
Image
These very nice items solve a few problems, trying to find 12 volt service tail/stop lights from a GPA, command or scout car, and just longevity. So this will mean I will have 2 LED service stop and tail, and 2 blackout tail. The concession is I don't get a blackout stop. So don't follow me too close. I found the two 12 volt blackout tail on eBay (dated 1943 no less).
Image
If money was no object, I think I would do these super-sexy cat-eye early doors. Reproductions are available, but no.
Image
Nice early photo showing cat eyes.
Image
Back to business. I had painted the doors and cans back when I was doing the reflectors so that was easy.
Image
Gathered up the components for assembly, and hung one on there.

Keep good notes. Maybe we can get my MBT to actually work...

That photo of the Ben Hur with the canvas looks great. Almost makes me want to get to work on mine.

Here's photos of the one I picked up last weekend. Really straight and licensed! Amazing that it only cost me $14 to transfer title. For a half second I forgot I was in California:

Looks like some double-wide is missing its draw bars:

Here are a couple other BH's that were where I picked mine up at. This is a really nice complete generator trailer?

Plus these other two. These two would probably make a nice complete project:

Tim,

Your lighting solution is exactly what I want to do with mine. And a friend wants to do with his as well (both of us will be towing with modern vehicles). What is the source of the 12volt LED lamps?

No problem, love seeing them. Looks like you found the main hoarder of Ben Hur's in No. CA. Nice that some still have the landing wheel. As far as DMV, I'm jealous, I don't have title, could be a problem.

Yeah, I haven't had the pleasure of registering an unregistered trailer yet. I have cracked the code on non-registered vehicle registration at the DMV. That's not too bad. Having this BH registered was what really sold me on it....plus the double-wide mobile home draw bars were quite fetching.

I know this sounds weird, but you may want to look into registering your trailer in Maine. That's where my Ben Hur is registered and I don't live there. The process is pretty straightforward and can be done by mail or via the internet. Just google main trailer registration and you should get a hit.

Forgot to mention that I didn't have a title for it, just a bill of sale.

Matt, I dug around this morning looking for the card I saved from the guy making the LED lights, no luck. His name was Paul, and he was selling at the Petaluma meet last year. I messaged my brother who also bought that day, he may have the info. A quick Google yielded nothing. I'll find out for you.

Thanks Tim. I don't have title and CA DMV is so screwed up, I really don't have high hopes. Theoretically, this is doable. I have a friend that buys unregistered trailers from Gov. Liquidation and gets through it somehow. But he has contacts at his favorite DMV in Barstow, 500 miles from here.

Tim, I need a pair of tail light brackets too, would you be able to help me acquire a pair? Also, I have registered three B.H. trailers in Calif. and found the easiest way that is 100% to work with out any headaches. Remember, the state of Calif. really wants all the revenue it can get even if it just trailer registration.
