BH side rack questions

Post by timsresort » Tue Dec 11, 2018 6:24 pm

A few questions for the guys on here that have experience with the Ben Hur side racks. I am about to assemble a set with white oak and new connecting hardware. First, I am planning to paint everything, and am using Gilllespie 33070 acrylic enamel, so what kind of prep should I perform prior to painting dry white oak? And second, for the guys that may have disassembled original sets, is the wood painted behind mating surfaces? Or did they get painted once assembled?
Thanks, Tim

I don't yet have this experience but everything I've seen here and on Facebook regarding wood troop seats and racks on Ben Hur trailers and on trucks was Boiled Linseed Oil. A 50/50 mi of Turpentine and Boiled Linseed Oil applied to the raw wood before painting.

That's what I did with mine. Gotta let it soak in for a few days... Smells great! Like a new rifle...
