Navy Trailer ID Help

Post by Brad Gates » Tue Nov 13, 2018 5:49 pm

Need some help to ID this trailer. A tandem axle, drop down rear gate and tool/storage box on each side. Trailer brakes are hydraulic and are of the surge type. Wheels are 16" combat. Parking brake handle is like a jeep. Only a small ID tag on left rear storage box. Tag stamped: CAHU 10353. Navy Department Bureau of Ordnance Western Electric.
Any ideas? Thanks
Brad

Had one of these minus the top boxes and not as decent shape I sold to Sam Winer (I think) about 20+ years back, never did figure it's purpose or origin out, the suspension is really unique, kind of like a .50 AA gun trailer but lighter, likely for a genset.
Always liked that suspension system, wondered if it could become a mini 6x6 jeep setup somehow with some work.
Hope someone can finally ID it.

I have one. They are for Radar generator use. It should have a surge brake master cylinder attached to the lunette. It would originally have had four jeep combat wheels. Mine never had the stowage boxes attached, and the original photo I found of the trailer in use doesn't show them, so I would guess the stowage boxes on yours are a later upgrade. I'm turning mine into a mobile kitchen.

Brad:

Navy number 10353 on the left rear storage box designates a General Radar Use Splicing Kit, for splicing RG-8/U and RG-11/U cables, and consists of molds, injection guns, connectors, splicing materials and miscellaneous tools. Date for that kit is July 1944. CAHU might (??) be the Navy abbreviation for Western Electric, the likely manufacturer or assembler of the splicing kit.

Gentlemen,
THANKS for all the information. I thought the storage boxes might have been added at a later date as the welds do not seem "factory". But "maybe" it was as built!
I would like to see a factory photo if anyone can advise as where to look.
Why the NAVY use of a radar generator trailer? Is it a rare bit of history?
Again thanks for info.
BRAD

Mine had 4 standard MB/GPW combat wheels with 7.00 X 16 tires on it and had WWII tail light remains on one side. The trailer was re-painted red at some point, including the wheels, and I wonder if it was possibly used to hold fire apparatus, like maybe a foam unit; that is total speculation. Is CAHU possibly CASU? CASU are Carrier Air Support Units, which are land-based organizations designed to support the complement of aircraft based on aircraft carriers.

There are two other same-type trailers I know of in the PA/MD area besides mine. I wonder if they were originally at Mustin Field in Philadelphia.

I will try to find the original photo I found of this trailer in use with the radar unit. It was on the web, so I don't know how easy it will be to find again.

Gentlemen,

Thanks you all for the continued "research". Amazing what shows up.
An interesting fact. The trailer is sitting in my "front yard" and occasionally some one will stop and ask questions about it's use. Recently an old codger stopped to look at a CJ-2A sitting beside the trailer. Turns out he was a NAVY post Korean War vet. So I asked him if he had any ideas about the trailer. His very first response was, "Oh its a trailer used to haul generators." WOW!! He was assigned to some electronics group and seemed very familiar with the trailer, it's use, and how the trailers were equipped. And Radar units were also mentioned in our conversation.
Another fact. The family whom I bought the trailer from told me the father worked for the local electric company as a line-man. Maybe that had something to do with it's civilian use??

Hard to believe. As more details, pictures show up I'll keep you all posted.

BRAD

If you enlarge the picture, the trailer markings say USMC ! Was wondering if you can find the same USMC marking on the right position on your trailer too. If so, next step is to find the number and to compare with the numbers that are visible on the trailers...........
Would be a miracle if your trailer is amongst these on the pic.

The radar system was a SCR-584. See the system with a drawing of the trailer here:
