BNen Hur Spindle Castle Nut

Post by Tim Shanteler » Wed May 23, 2018 11:42 am

I took the drums off, cleaned the spindles and bearings and repacked with high temp grease. I tightened the castle nuts to where they where before, drums were tight, no slop and installed the cotter pins and took it for a test drive. The hubs were nice and cool. I jacked it up and grab the wheel and rocked it. There it a very small amount of play in it. A friend said that's because of the leverage I have with the tire, something you wouldn't feel with just the drum on. He suggested I may want to move the nut to the next notch. I did this and the nut barely makes the next notch for the cotter pin. The wheel spins freely and now there is no play with the tire on. My question is, is the nut to tight and the wheel should have a little play? Or there should never be any play and the nut is fine. I'm taking it to the WWII Weekend in Reading PA (a long drive) and I don't want to run into any problems.

Thanks in advance for the comments.... folks have a lot more experience with things like this than me, so I never hesitate to ask.

I'd rather have just a hair of play: The TM says to assemble the hub and drum assemblies into place, then tighten until there is a slight drag(while turning drum), and back off adjusting nut 1/6th turn. I would go with that, and don't sweat the wobble- too tight will destroy your bearings in short order.
