SNL G527, Trailer Water 250 Gal., Unit 0961531,1 ea.

Hello, Finally got around to loading my pictures of my Springfield Auto Works trailer, a few years ago I was at a Aggregate Quarry in Corona, Ca (Now defunct Paul Hubbs Harlow Quarry). One day while working on a 980G wheel loader, I went to find the Head/Latrine, while looking around the area I glanced over and did a double take to see what I thought was a Ben-Hur water trailer...After my pitstop I returned my attention to the trailer to try and Identify its Manufacturer and a possible year of build, I found one of the data plates was still on the trailer! After a few minutes of scratching through old paint the year "1945" was found, but no month of Manufacture. I began to get excited and spoke to a onsite person and he said I had to call "Mr. Hubbs". I then called and left a few messages, finally he and I spoke and he did not recall the trailer, but thought I was talking about a CCKW that he cut up for scrap a week earlier, All said and done I bought it for $160.00 Dollars. I had a Good buddy help with a pintlehook he had to hook it up and he helped with the tire changing.

The Scrappers were supposed to come and cut it up the next day for the Aluminum and Steel...talk about lucky timing!

Boy, that was spooky trip because the tires held air but they were Very Very dry-rotted, But I made it home in one piece. It did have some issues: missing water boxes, the left Parking brake plate was spinning with the drum, A broken parking cable mount and torn-out cable, the transfer pump had been "torn" off violently and partially collapsed the tank, missing a hose rack and missing the landing gear. I took a bunch of photos to document the process before I started work on My G7117. It still needs work, But I'll keep pluggin' away at it...

Here are the photos:

Nice photo documentation.
My claustrophobia wouldn't have allowed me to get inside that tank.

Got my "New" data plates from "lt.horne" recently, haven't had a chance to mount them, but that will come in due time...I don't know how he does it but it amazes me every time.

Great job. How did you determine your USA number? My trailer doesn't have any visible markings that I can find yet, but it does have the data plate.

Sorry about the lag time...I forgot all about this post.

I will pass the word on the dimentions next time I am by the trailer. As for the U.S.A. number I "Gues-stimated" by starting out with the first U.S.A. number on the contract MFR list for 1945. The list I referenced was on the CCKW.org website, It has production numbers of each company, I then counted up from my serial number to the beginning unit. The problem I had was the serial...It is 9218, yet there were not that many trailers made that year so I figured they started with the "9000" as their number "1". I then counted forward to the number

http://www.cckw.org/Water_Buffalo_Prod_Data.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I counted up from each build contract and like the was the second contract number looked compared to the first contract group. That is the best way I could figure out a number to put on it without anything other that a unit serial number. My data plate was dated 1945 so that was a motivating factor too, but there was no "date of delivery" stamped into the plate.

Hello Everyone! Saw DRH's Ben Hur work and it got me motivated to post pictures of "Re-sealing" my water transfer pump on the G527.

I have to upload and post to the Surface Zero site so stand by for message traffic on the net...

Hey Cody, great thread again. Boy WE sure had quite the Motor Pool going over at Alpha Co., Didn't We!?! This thread brings back a lot of fond memories. Ron's G-506 Dump, Larry working on His WC-3, Our G.M.C. AFKX 352 L.O.M.V., and YOU crawling inside that water tank on a 90 degree day to polish aluminum. I remember how excited you got when you found the guy who had several correct water pumps for the tank.
WOW!! Good times bringin' a tear to my eyes, I sure do miss 'em.

The procedure for making your own leather seal is pretty easy, the leather thickness I used id approximately 1/8th inch thick (3.1 mm) or so. This style of water transfer pump needs to be "Primed" by un-threading the top cap and pouring in some water to the top side of the piston area. This pump only has some casting part numbers, but no manufacturer/maker cast into the parts.

It looks exactly like a F.E. Myers branded water pump, Myers has been around since the 1870's.

There is actually 2 check valves in the hand pump, the pump draws water from a known good water source through the strainer, up the hose to the 1st check valve w/ brass weight into the cylinder. Next, the piston has a poppet valve built into the piston head, when the lever is raised the piston travels downward towards the bottom check valve and allows the water to move upward to the top side of the piston. Then, when the lever is pushed down the upper piston poppet seals against the piston trapping the water on the top of the piston and forcing it out of the pump assembly into the discharge piping into the tank.

The skeleton piston/ poppet/ piston seal retainer are made of brass, but I had previously coated all surfaces with Vaseline as a preservative so the previously sandblasted items would not just rust/ oxidize again. The leather piston seal is an oddball size of 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) , the old farm water "Pitcher Pumps" are all 3 inches (7.62 cm) that I could find so I never found an off the shelf seal that I could use. I used some Neatsfoot oil on the leather because it work very well, It is actually made from cow bones so it soaks right in to preserve the leather.

If you look close the leather seal on the piston is slightly shorter than I would have liked it to be...Next time I make a leather seal I am going to use the outer circumference of the "bottom end cover" to make it a bit longer of a leather seal to get the spring expander covered up more.

Contact Farrell Fox, Cody. He and I spoke about them at one time, He told me that He had some made from original examples He has. He may be persuaded to have another set built under the right motivating circumstances.
