What were the originals cast in?Tapper02 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 06, 2021 1:01 pmNo progress on this...unfortunately the guy I was working with gave up on it. I just received the mold proof and my original plates back in the mail yesterday. This is probably good to go for making the molds...if anyone knows someone who does lead castings please let me know.
No movement on the Schelm Bros blanks...trying a different approach later this week.

Stalled but not dead. Sent the mold proof to my brother-in-law whose brother dabbles in casting as well (just found this out recently). Hope to get these Fruehauf ones done and move on to casting some Schelm Bros. blanks for acid etching. Sorry it's taking so long but being in a high density area like San Diego no one around here does stuff like this and I have to search online for leads.
Fruehauf were lead.
Schelm Bros. were zinc.
Youngstown Steel Door were brass.

Thanks. If you run into more issues with metal casting have you considered resin? The picture below shows what can be done with resin. The two cell connectors are cold cast with resin and aluminum powder, they are not painted. The lead terminal and clamp are actual lead. It won't weather exactly the same but if scratched for chipped the color is all the way through it is not painted on. This process can be done with brass powder as well.

I know this is an old thread but I'd be interested in a Schelm plate if this project gains traction again.

I wish I could say yes, but unfortunately it has stalled big time. I moved last summer and am still trying to establish new contacts here in the southwest Tennessee area. It's still on the "to do" list...I'll keep everyone in mind if I get it off the ground again.
