Early Converto dump trailer

Post by roblenzz » Wed May 13, 2020 1:15 pm

I have an early dump trailer 0360522 that i brought home last night. I almost passed on it because of all the work it looked like it would take to bring it back to how i thought it should look. Looking at the majority of the dump trailers, the first thing that hit me was it looks like the front angles had been cut and angles reduced. Then the added pieces of the frame, tube axle and wrong lunette. Landing leg looked like it was installed backwards and looks like someone cut off the tabs for the long rod going down the side to release the tailgate. Taillight housings and guards were cut off.

Why would someone cut off the lunette just to install another one and not a 2" reciever ball? I knew the diamond tailgate was wrong so it came off. The makeshift hinges were removed along with the tabs to hold the tailgate up.

Thanks to DavidA's Converto page i stopped with the cut off-wheel. Looks like the front angle is correct as it matches other "early" trailers. I take it there is an "Early vs Late" or just contract differences? What follows are pictures of individual questions about certain parts.

Thanks for looking

Saw a couple more of these in the Jeep Draw examples. What was this for?

Is this an early tailgate release, like mine should be or is this a mod? This picture is another example from Jeep Draw

Creating my own tailgate latches from plate steel and welding a piece around the edge to simulate the cast look.

Yeah Oz thanks for your willingness to get a pattern for me. Just found out over the weekend that there was a local fella that had one. Still not sure about the release mechanism on this one though. You have any thoughts about that?

Regarding the release mechanism, all I can add is from images of my Converto and the TM 5-9084 Converto Trailer taken from the pages in Jeepdraw. I've incluedd images of both and can find none with a welded rod for the release mechanism and handle. Mine has a welded bracket, which holds the handle. When the heandle is moved, it pivots and pulls the rod forward, rotates the pawl which holds the gate pins closed.

I'll bet the bracket broke off at some point, and a rod was welded in place of the bracket, which had a hole for a bolt to hold the handle. The welded rod looks to serve the same function. It looks like in the end, they just gave up on the release mechanism and welded a handle onto the pawl. This meant you had to get out of the Jeep to manually open the dump gate. In the original configuration, there was a rope tied to the top of the handle, and you could pull it from the Jeep. Made unloading easier. My assessment anyway. :?

Bobby,

Your trailer looks awesome and that bracket reproduction job is very nice !!!
I am so glad that you got that trailer, and saved it from where it was.
It will be a very welcome addition behind your great Jeep at future North Florida
Military Vehicle rallies and events.
:D :D :D :D

Keep up your great works !!

Raymond

Just send me a PM with your address and I'll trace the pattern and mail it to you. Maybe you can have someone near you cut it out of plate steel with a plasma cutter.
