What is it?

Post by W. Winget » Sat Mar 18, 2023 7:22 pm

Any ideas on attached. About 36" long, three outrigger wings? instead of trunnions, no cascabel, threaded fuse hole, no smaller inner chamber like a mortar.
Not sure its a gun really, broken pile driver?

The 6th photo down does it say TOP on it. Looks like an O clearly to me but T and P in your normal pic and kinda disappears when I blow it up. Are the fins equidistant on it?

I only see what might be leveling pad locators for a sighting device (although this would straddle a fuze)
From the end it looks to have been an X configuration with nicely round inner sections of the attaching web points. ( no starwars relic jokes please...)
There are white scrape marks on top, but thats likely handling it.
Came from a Richmond Va. area dirt landfill.
Cracks may be from ice freezing in it.
Base of a flag pole??? No idea here.

Part of a vintage cannon barrel with the touch hole/ vent ?
Or a foundry furnace/crucible?

Looks like an old artillery cannon. I mean really old. Like during the Civil War.
I have seen pictures of cannons on wood spoked wheels that look similar to the one in this picture and old movies.
They would be set on the front line with a pile of steel or cast cannon balls stacked next to them.
The barrel tipped up. A fuse placed in the small hole at the rear. Powder poured in. Don't know if packing was used ?? The cannon ball rammed in. Then the barrel lowered to the desired trajectory and the fuse lit.
Pretty crude but it blasted a huge solid ball at the " enemy ". Depended which side you were on as to who that was.
Don't try to catch the ball.
