Recoil indicator on artillery, 37mm M3
I have a recoil indicator on my 37mm M3A1 gun, see pic. I can find nothing in my
manuals on how it works. I use my cell phone now to record the recoil and just stop it to see how far it recoiled. But I would like to use the recoil indicator if possible, I tried putting grease on the end of the bolt but it just throws it off. I have looked in the following manuals but have not run across it yet, I have also searched this website and the internet.
TM 9-1254 37-mm Antitank guns…
FM 23-70 Basic Field Manual
“Officer Candidates’ School Course of Instruction in 37mm Antitank Gun M3A1” from Marine Corp Schools published 1944

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same question about the one on my 3” M5. No clue how it works and just a vague mention in the manual.

Could it possibly hold a piece of chalk or grease pencil?

I cant tell from the picture. Maybe yours is worn out?

It is just a bolt which if you screw it in it would rub against the sleigh of the barrel? I do not know how it works?

Hello,
This could help you.
It’s extracted from a Field Artillery school manual.

l looked up on the internet for a pdf version of this but there are a couple different ones. Do you know the number, name and date of this manual? It would be good for me to get a copy and read thru it. Thanks again.

Might be in here. That should be an operator/10 level task.

Type this in your best friend Google on Internet:
field artillery cannon weapons systems and ammunition handbook

I have the 1981 version but there is also a 1983 version . The recoil control is on page 3.15.

You put grease on the smooth metal surface and teh bolt just barely touches, when the gun recoils, the bolt removes the grease.

The 75mm pack has a scale showing how much recoil the gun has, you put grease on the scale, put the recoil pin in the lower position ( bolt in this case) and fire the weapon. The bolt will disturb the grease or remove it and leave a line. On the pack, you just look at the scale to see how far it recoiled. I didn't know until an arty guy showed me how to use it.
