Jean,

I attach an extract from my TM 9-223 manual.

But the wording used in the manual appears to be different from the wording on your mount.

I am in the process of restoring a M55 mount that originated from Greece.

Be advised, if you are looking to put an M55 in WWII markings, they are going to be incorrect. While the M55 was in production during WWII, it was still in testing by the cessation of hostilities. The farthest overseas the M55 got during WWII was Hawaii, and I have photos of one of the test articles in the back of a CCKW in April 1945 there.

The M51 and obviously the M16 were in widespread use though. Any photo you see of an M45 turret in the back of a CCKW during WWII (and there are plenty!) are all turrets that were removed from M51 trailers, not M55s. I have gone through every unit's history that has the M55 as TO&E equipment (as early as 1943) and none of them received M55s before the end of the war.

The M55's first combat action was 29 June 1950 at Suwon airfield. After that, they saw heavy combat in both Korea and Vietnam, finally being withdrawn from US service by the end of the 1970s in National Guard units.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I have the same markings on the bearing cover, but very difficult to make out what it says. Also from the greek army, I believe.

Does anyone know if the text differs from what is stated in the manual? Currently restoring an M55 Quad setup.

Thanks,
