Hello,

Nice work Fernando , getting fresh oil seals in there will make for a happy truck and owner :D :D !

I haven't started work on my 41 GMC yet, but I am looking forward to it !
But I have been collecting parts, and just got some rear frame rail sections to make repairs.

You are doing a great job with your restoration, and I appreciate all your informative posts !

Keep 'em Rolling !!

Best Regards,
Ray

Hi Fernando,

Looks great!

Is that an inner bearing race in the 2nd & 3rd pics? Looks like you disassembled one or more of the bearings?

There appears to be some wear on those surfaces.

Best Regards....

Yes,is an inner bearing race in 3rd and 4th pics. That inner oil seal was changed in august,22nd 2014.In september,25th 2014 you sent me a "rear brake shoe PIN".I saw that the inner bearing race is bad.Do you have the measures of the inner cone and rollers and race to me? I will try to find one here.

Hi Fernando,

From your pics ( 2 & 3 ) that looks like one of the original "barrel" roller bearings. The name comes from the shape of the rollers - which have a barrel shape to them.

Rear Bearings 00.jpg

These can be difficult to find. If you want to stick with them, I would try some of the usual parts places in Europe such as:

https://www.wildenbergparts.nl/

https://jeepest.com/gb/1106-wheels-hubs-cckw352-353

I have seen them pop up on auction sites such as e-pay from time to time.

Others have had luck replacing them with conventional tapered roller bearing. Obviously, the outer race will need to be replaced as well. It can be knocked out of the hub with a punch and hammer.

When switching from barrel to tapered roller bearings, it is recommended to not mix tapered roller and barrel bearings in the same hub. This means that both the inner and outer bearings should be replaced if tapered roller bearings are being installed.

There are a number of threads online that talk about this. Here's just one of them:

viewtopic.php?f=26&t=285487&hilit=barre ... g#p1655806

I don't have the part numbers for direct replacement tapered roller bearings. Ord 9 SNL G-508, lists sizes next to the Hyatt barrel bearing part numbers. Perhaps you can use these as a cross reference.

Also, someone on this site may have performed a conversion in the past and may know the exact tapered roller bearings to use.

Best Regards...

In 2014 I saw written on them:Both HYATT,inner D12051 and outer B11786.The only one that was dismantled at that opportunity and now the rollers also fell off when the mechanic hit with a bar and the hammer to remove it was the one on the left rear wheel.

So it is a real easy conversion for the current taper bearings, no need for metric conversion if you don’t have to. The number is the same! KB11786Y and KD12051Z, they even come with a warning pamphlet to replace both inner/out bearings and both races(cups). It is a very common General Motors bearing, used until the 70s or maybe 80s even.

Jared. What I did was take the decimal parts of the inch and look for the corresponding or closest caliper on the caliper itself. I fixed the caliper and looked at the millimeter scale and there was the direct conversion. Really easy. This will make it easier for me to I look for the bearing in stores or even in São Paulo on the internet.
