FS late CCKW steel bed

Post by Robin » Sun Jul 10, 2022 3:33 pm

Posting for a friend. I know the pics are terrible, but I wasn't prepared to clear out the brush around it. As I recall, it's a really nice all steel bed. $1200. Located near Salem, Oregon.

Hello Robin,

That is an awesome late bed !!
If that was in Florida I would grab it :D

There are so many CCKWs out there missing their beds, this would be an instant fix !
I hope someone can get it for their GMC project.

Best Regards,
Ray

Man, they are always out west…. Looks pretty decent for someone though. I know of 3 now out westward actively for sale now. Still looking for one here in New England.

Yes, isn't that always the case !

If you find an "extra" early 353 long bed in the east, let me know .
I have a 1941 353, that I would like to find the early style bed for, before I use my late bed :D :D

With gas prices so high, getting one picked up out west is not too much of a possibility.

Hello Robin, any information from your friend as to if the bed is LWB 353 or SWB 352?

Hi,
i wanted to give you all an update on that bed. I live only 1 1/12 hours away so it was doable to go get it. I took about 3 hours with highlift jack rollers and winches to get it dragged up onto a trailer . I turned out to be a wooden bed in fair shape with a few boards needing replacement, the metal is in perfect shape with hardly any rust. the step brackets were missing on the tailgate. best of all the side panels and seats were in it and are in very good shape. maybe needing 2 or 3 board replaced.

Hello,

That is a great save right there !!!
The rarity of the sides and seats alone are worth the great price !!

Congratulations !!

Looking forward to your GMC restoration post :D :D :D

The G needs more CCKW restoration efforts !!

Best Regards,
Ray

Could anyone out there post the dimensions for the rear CCKW bumperettes. thickness, contours bolt hole pattern etc. I , and I expect others could really use that information to create the missing bumperettes on out vehicles as finding them for sale is proving to be difficult.

my CCKW is a dump . in the bed about there are large wood braces on either side on the main rails. It this where the dump mechanism hooks up?
also are all wood beds put together with bolted sides?

Hello,

I am missing my bumperettes, but hopefully someone can provide the information.

This bed is a 1945 style steel bed, with a wood plank floor.

The actual "wood bed" for the CCKW, was pretty much all wood, including the sides.

The very early CCKW beds were all steel, with a steel floor, as far as I know or assume.

Others will know, as I haven't delved into the research yet, but the bed I have for my 1941 353 project, is a late bed like yours.

The Tipper or dump model truck, has a slightly different designed bed, but the dimensions are the same.
It had a head board that folded up over the cab, and a load divider that came up from the floor at the front of the bed to help prevent overloading the truck.
The tipper also didn't use the steel mud flaps, so that is a nice thing that you won't have to locate.

Best Regards,
Ray

I believe this type bed is often referred to as a composite bed. Something of a cross between an all steel bed, and an all wood bed.
