Re: cckw camshaft gear question
Hi Fahtal,
I would personally not even consider using a fiber gear as a replacement.
A number of companies make replacement aluminum timing gears for the GMC 270.
When I rebuilt my engine, I used Cloyes, and it has performed well.
Here is a link to the Cloyes website:

I would also replace the gears as a set - both the crankshaft and camshaft gear.
Additionally, I would seriously consider dropping the oil pan and cleaning out the sump of any broken teeth from the fiber gear. I would also remove the oil pump, and either replace the pickup screen, or clean it very thoroughly. If one of those teeth make it past the oil pump screen and into the pump, it can lock up the pump and cause considerable damage to the engine. It looks like this installation is in a DUKW, so I know that means pulling the engine, but its better to be safe than sorry as they say.
Best Regards....

Re: cckw camshaft gear question
Install an electric fuel pump and make a plate to block the mechanical fuel pump opening.
Take the oil drain line from the oil filter and connect to a fitting brazed onto the top of the timing cover.
Works great and no need to worry about that very small fitting attempting to lube the camshaft gears

This sounds like several great suggestions for longevity, I would add, (as it is a Swimming vehicle) consider a second electric fuel pump (both back at the tank) with a separate filter with cutoff valves which could be piped in and turned on should the primary system go down while swimming. It could add potential fuel leaks, but the redundancy on the waterways would be worth it, hard to paddle 6 tons of dead weight through the water.

Re: cckw camshaft gear question
I found an old fuel pump and gutted it. Then, made a block out plate for both the fuel system side and engine side of the pump.
This allows the stock fuel line configuration to be retained.
You can still replace the hollow bolt with a solid one, and relocate the oil filter return line to the timing chain cover, if necessary.
That camshaft gear oiler orifice is pretty small. I can see where it might be a source of concern, especially on older engines that might have dirt or sludge present in the lubrication system.
