Starter.
My starter has 4(four) COIL and 4(four) SHOE POLE 12 volts. The ARMATURE is still 6 volts.I already changed many DRIVES because it produces a big noise and the drive does not turn the flywheel.Which is the probably cause?

Re: Starter.
Hi Fernando,
It is my understanding that there are differences between the 12 volt starters /flywheels, and the 6 volt ones. I don't remember the specifics, but I can do some searching and see if I can find more information.
Is it possible that you have one type of flywheel ring gear and the other type of starter drive?
If not, what do the teeth on your flywheel ring gear look like? Are they clean and sharp, or are they worn or chipped?
The ring gear can be replaced fairly easily, and the are available from a number of sources. The most difficult part is that you need to remove the flywheel first. But after that, it is not hard at all.
I just rebuilt a spare starter for my truck. I used a drive from Airtex. I will have to look up the number, but it cross referenced to the GM PN of 1873789.
Best Regards...

Re: Starter.
Hi mudflap. My starter was original 6 volts, but now with four pole shoes and four coils(12 volts) and armature(6 volts) yet.I have an extra starter too with four pole shoes and only two coils and armature all 6 volts.I am wanting to rewind its armature to 12 volts.I did not see my flywheel ring gear look like yet.I think it is for 6 volts type.Regards.
