Found this on the top of the transmission on an 8-42 CCW. Is that tag a cast date or build date? Also anyone have an idea if that 44 next to the tag represents anything?

Re: 1942 CCW transmission tag
"Tags" such as those are common on cast parts. They were originally attached to the pattern that was used to make the sand mold, into which the material was poured.
It is probably an ID number for the pattern, as opposed to a production date code as it is unlikely the manufacturer would unscrew and replace the tag every day.
If you look closely at the attached pic, you can see a similar "tag" on my transmission, near the bottom.
Not sure about the 44, or those other numbers in that area.
Check your transmission for a machined pad on the top of the case flange, near the front on the left side. Mine has a number stamped there: L2144D
I have seen similar date codes, and I would bet that this one translates to:
L = December
21 = 21st day
44 = 1944
D = Day shift
Best Regards......

Re: 1942 CCW transmission tag
Took a look for that area on the transmission. We were pleasantly surprised with what we found. If it’s like the MB transmissions, this would be an assembly date. Whatever it is it is H 8 42 (August 8th 4). The motor has a cast date of G 7 42. The CCW has a DOD of 8-42. So good chance it’s the original transmission and motor to the truck!
Thanks for pointing that out.

Re: 1942 CCW transmission tag
Glad you were able to locate that date code.
With those numbers, it is indeed, likely that the powertrain is original to your vehicle.
Very cool !!!
