Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello Zeph,
Yes that seems to be the perception today , and the reality in many formerly nice cities and areas.
But we have to think positive and do what we can to maintain our civilization and our history, and know the majority of people are pretty nice people !!
Now a nice update ....
I am very excited that a G member has some frame sections for me to repair this great Jimmy !!
I will now be able to soon weld on a repair section from a scrapped 41 frame.
This is awesome, as it will eliminate that big issue !!
Now the bed will be able to fit right on the truck once repaired.
I also would , thinking about it, like to find an all steel 1941-1942 long 353 bed to match this truck !!
I have a nice late 45 bed that I will use, but if anyone has one sitting around , please let me know !
It would be nice to match a lone early bed up, with this early truck,
which will always be a reminder to remember the Pearl Harbor attack and the start of WW2 !!!
Then I could use the 45 bed on an open cab GMC project.
Plus with a steel bed I will save a small fortune on oak planking !!!
I do have an all steel bed
that I was lucky enough to find and save, for an early 352 short bed Jimmy restoration some day.
Just need to find an early closed cab 352 someday
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello ,
I finished some more work on the driver's side engine panel.
I filled in additional pitting. It is now in an acceptable condition !
Primer has been added, and new od paint will be done tomorrow.
These parts are really fun to restore !!
Update :
First coat of olive drab paint is on the panel !! Update : The second coat of beautiful olive drab is on , making the panel look great, and will preserve it for the future !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Hello Zeph,
Thanks so much !
Merry Christmas to You and Your Family as well !!
It looks like you had a great Christmas party at your Motorpool HQ !!!
I will paint the panel today .
I placed some Christmas Wreaths at the National Cemetery here in Florida for my Father and other 70th Division Veterans there as well.
Time certainly does fly by, as a New Year is almost here.
Best Regards to All for Christmas,
Ray

I got a good picture of the dated glass passenger side window.
Dated 9-41 !!
It is still in good shape, and I can reuse it on the restoration.
The rear window also appears to be dated 9 41 as well.
Here are some pictures:

Here is a picture of the rear window date code, some delamination has occurred in the glass, but we can see it too looks like 9 41 .

The driver's side front windshield glass is dated 11 41.
Here is a picture !

Perfect for a December 4, 1941 date of delivery !!
The driver's door window was smashed, but is dated 1942.
It had already been replaced during the war !!

Hello Kirk,
I got the new acid etch stencils for my 2 GMC trucks !!!
Thank you for all your excellent efforts, they look perfect !
I am looking forward to using them once I get new glass, and get to the point of restoring the doors and windshield windows.
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello,
Great news on the GMC !!
I have purchased a correct winch and frame extensions for her !!!
I finally found one
This will be a beautiful fix for the front end.
I "may" look into cutting the rails, and welding them to the extension rails that are riveted on the truck now.
When they cut them off, they left about 2-3 inches past the grill.
I think that would be a better fix than trying to rivet the new ones onto the frame and spring shackles.
But she will be coming together soon, I have spoken to the owner of a closed cab ring mount, and it is mine as soon as it gets dug out of storage.
If anyone has one available, I would still be interested. One in hand is always better than 2 in the bush !
If anyone has an early all steel 1941-1942 long 353 bed they want to sell, let me know.
I will use the 45 bed, but if I get the correct one first, that would be great.
Thanks Frank USMC for tipping me off about the winch !!!
I would still like to find another winch for my ex-French return Tipper GMC , that also had its winch cut off !
Uggg !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Great score on the winch and the glass bead Ray. Keep plugging away at her and you'll be driving her in no time!

You are welcome Ray!!
When I saw it for sell remember I did a panic call to you....no need for small talk, you need to act fast as I found you the winch! Got off the phone, held my breath, and you texted me later you got it!

Hello,
Thanks Frank and Dave !!!
She is a beautiful truck, a piece of American History, that will ride again !
I am very excited to get this winch and the extensions.
I am getting an order together for some key parts from a supplier in Holland.
That will be so nice to get those missing small parts, that are a must have for the truck !!
Now if we can get affordable GMC tires available, we will really see some progress.
I am still waiting on the spare frame sections to repair the cut off ends to the rear.
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello,
Well the 10 new CCKW inner tubes have arrived !
These are made in the USA in the1990's , for the US Government.
You can't find better tubes anywhere.
It is reported these are in perfect condition.
Way better than any Chinese tubes that blow upon first use.
I got these from an ebay seller.
Now I just need to wait for the new CCKW tires to be put in production, and will have a good start !!
I will have to order 3 more, 1 for the GMC spare, and 2 for a Ben Hur.
Best Regards,
Ray

Nice Ray! Good to see that you too scored on these tubes. I elected to tear the boxes open and store my tubes in a canvas duffel bag which then went into my closet. I'm glad I opened the boxes the way I did because had I used a box cutter, I probably would have cut the tubes too. They aren't in any other wrapping material except the boxes they're sent in.

Thanks Dave !
They are great tubes !
I have the stacked in my jeep barn, and won't open them until I get to the tires, well until I can afford them !
I sent my order to my buddy Thierry in France to order up many cab parts for the GMC .
There is a supplier another G member mentioned , LWD Parts, that have many nice parts.
He will order them there, and ship them to me, along with other parts
from Germany.
I also have an NOS early starter for this truck, that I got a while back.
I am looking forward to getting the cab restored , in my spare time !!
It can be done Amigo !!
Best Regards,
Ray

I’d hate to be restoring a CCKW right now. Tire and shipping prices are through the roof. 2 halftrack tires, tube, flaps, shipping was $1875.

I have ordered direct from LWD parts several times. They are great. But, most cab parts can be found here in the states at Jim Carter Truck Parts.

Hello Jesse,
Thanks for reminding me of that supplier.
I will check and see parts they have.
I am looking forward to getting this restoration moving forward.
I want to get a few cab items together, so I can get it restored and looking great !
Tire prices are ridiculous !!!
I need 2 front tires for my Halftrack as well.
I still have to get a full set for the GMC, not to mention a couple Dodge WC's, and I don't think prices are getting any lower !
I just got a beautiful set of 5 Goodyear tires for my jeep from Jegs.
They offer free shipping, and the tires were $224.99 each.
Best Regards,
Ray
