1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello,
I was lucky enough to find myself a great 1941 Closed Cab CCKW, winch model, with a roof MG port all in one beautiful old Pre -Pearl Harbor CCKW 6x6 truck
I am making a post for the truck so as I get things done on her , I can keep the post updated.
I have always wanted this model Jimmy, a closed cab with winch.
Now this truck needs a lot of tlc, and some parts as well.
I need some winch extensions and a winch if anyone has a deal on one
I also would like to find some additional good shape CCKW rims.
This truck needs 5 more, and I also need about 10 more for a tipper that returned from France that was rescued some time ago.
I do have an nos early small mouth gas tank for this truck, and I also have a rust free 1945 bed for this truck as well.
The 1945 bed has different rope tie down hooks, but that won't be an issue.
I also need to locate the big gun mount for above the cab. I do have a lead on one, but I understand that the 353 is different than a 352 mount. I will have to see what it looks like and what truck it is for.
The engine looks really clean and complete, so hopefully will fire right up.
I won't get the truck here , to the Great State of Florida, until this September.
So this is another great project on the agenda
I also have a lead on the troop seats, so hopefully they will pan out !!!
Here are some pictures of this beautiful 1941 CCKW :
Keep 'em Rolling !!!!!
Best Regards,
Ray

This looks like a great project Ray. A big project! A lot larger than the Dodges I have worked on.
Although, I don't know a great deal about CCKW's, I have always wanted one.
Keep us updated when you get started. Would love to follow along.

Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello,
Thanks Zeph !!
I will do, I love the CCKW and their unique sound and looks.
It will be a few months before I can pick it up. I hope , and do plan, to be done with my 1943 GPW restoration by that time.
This will be a great fun project.
I will start another barn as well to keep it , and some other vehicles out of the weather and ready for restoration.
Best Regards,
Ray

Ray,
Congratulations on the new truck. It looks like a decent starting point, and the frame looks very nice. I look forward to seeing your progress.
I too have a pre-pearl harbor truck. They are a quirky mix of military and non-military pieces, especially in the interior.

Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello,
Thanks Paul !!
I am so looking forward to this big GMC project. I think most of the parts are rust free and solid.
That will save a ton of time !!!!
I will make some calls this weekend to see if I can secure most of the missing parts for this beauty.
If so, that will be awesome !!!
My brother has a Chevy Dump truck
that he will be restoring in the future. But we did notice some frame cracks behind the passenger side cab along the frame rail.
Hopefully they will be repairable.
This CCKW is something that I have wanted since I was 5 years old !!
I am overjoyed with it and can hardly wait until September
to pick it up in Kansas !!!
I will keep a look out for a winch, I have seen many over the years for sale, some with the frame extensions as well . I just need to find a deal on one, and that will be a major part found.
Actually, I need 2 winches, as the one on my very rough French tipper, was removed, and the rails cut off just like this one. I did get a cab and chassis from a compressor truck, that has the frame extensions on it still. I just need one more set.
Best Regards,
Ray

Ray,
Yes the sheet metal on your new GMC looks to be pretty nice in respect to rust. I have seen a number of GMC/Chevy winches come and go as well. It will happen if you want it to. That winch and dumper PTO must be a rare piece.
I posted a topic on the 1/2-2 ton section just the other day. Perhaps I have some frame donor material for your brothers dumper. Get him to check it out.

I know a guy in Wisconsin with a IH M5-6 with a winch. He wants to sell the truck. I dont know if he would sell just the winch. Not even sure its the same.

Gar Wood 2U-512 is the correct winch for the Jimmy. You have to also make certain that the Power Take Off trans. is correct for the 5 speed transmission. The Chevy P.T.O. isn't compatible. I'm looking forward to following THIS restoration Ray !!

Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello,
Thanks for the winch information !
Hopefully I can find 2 winches that are complete. This truck needs one, and my French tipper needs one.
I did just buy an nos canvas cover for the ring mount hole in the cab from Midwest. This is going to be a great project !!
I plan to get canvas for the GMC from Newlife, as they appear to be only makers of it.
Best Regards,
Ray

Hello,
Thanks Thierry !!
She will be a great GMC !!
You will be able to take her for a ride next time you are here
Or work on it
You have such a great collection of vehicles in France, especially your GMCs, Command Car, and now your big Pacific M-26 !!
Your Pacific restoration is great !
I will want to take a ride in it next time I am in France !!
Keep up your great work, and Keep them Rolling , as you already are doing !!
I know you had a great time in Normandy last week, thanks for the pictures and videos !!
Here are a few more pictures of the truck : I hope those seat springs are original, so I can recover them in short order !!! I think they are
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: 1941 GMC CCKW 353 Restoration Project
Hello,
As seen in the above picture, this CCKW is missing its side panels under the hood.
Several years ago a G member had a set for sale that I was fortunate enough to get from him.
Since the truck isn't here yet, I figure I best get busy working on some parts that I have, starting with the set of side panels that need restoration.
I had a little free time today so time to get busy
The panels need some welding repairs, and some straightening as well.
Here are some pics of the panels and a little progress. I straightened one panel, and welded up a crack or two.
Today I used a heat gun to heat up the 4 layers of paint that protected the panels over the years, and easily scraped it all all.
The heat gun really softened the paint up !!
It took very little time. With the layers removed, sandblasting will be much easier and quicker !!
I will weld some cracks on the second panel next. Then will blast, prime and paint.
Any small pitting will be filled in and sanded back down with Metal to Metal metallic based filler.
The stuff works great !
Best Regards,
Ray
