CCKW Bed space height and tie down bolt size.

Post by kdsmilitary » Sat Aug 17, 2019 10:58 am

I have rescued an early 1942 CCW 353 but its bed has been removed and I cannot find a reference for the dimensions of the wooden spacer blocks between the box and the frame.
I have also read different articles on the correct tie down bolt configuration for the early vehicles. Some have said it was long 5/8 hex head bolts through tie plates, and some have said it should be "U" bolts. If anyone has data I would greatly appreciate your responses.

Thank you,
Kirk

Hi Kirk,

Just looked in the December 1943, the July 1945 SNL G-508 ORD 9 and G655 books. 353 6 qty U-bolt 5/16-18x17 1/8. Double checked my 353 here at the house and it matches. But I have seen some rebuilds with bolts.

On the filler blocks are you looking for just the blocks or the strips for the frame rivets?

Excellent data on the "U" bolts, I will try to get them ordered.
On the blocks, I'm not completely sure what all I am looking for and wasn't really aware of any strips with rivets.
Since mine has none of the original attachment hardware, and this is my first CCW/CCKW type vehicle, I was not aware of the riveted strips.
Is there any way I could request a couple images of how the blocks, "U" bolts, and riveted strips are integrated ?
Greatly appreciate the help !!!!

Chris,
Just want to make sure it lists 5/16-18. ???
There is not one manufacturer that has a 5/16 "U" bolt size available in anything larger than a muffler clamp.
If that is really the case, I will have to have them all custom made, oe go with the next larger size.

I think the U-bolts are 5/8" UNF thread.

That would seem to be more realistic, and definately a size that is more available.

Thank you.
